Active Speakers
Active Speakers have a built-in power amplifier meaning that they can be connected directly to to the music source without the need for an external amp. Some advantages of active speakers are that they avoid speaker-to-amplifier matching, limiting is in-built and they require less cabling as they can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth.

A soundbar is a slim unit with multiple built-in speakers designed to dramatically improve sounds from a television as most flat screen TVs have rudimentary speakers and notoriously poor sounds.

Passive Speakers
Passive speakers require a separate amplifier to power them and speaker cables to be able to transfer the sound from amplifier to the speakers. With passive speakers you will have to make sure that your speakers and amplifier are compatible with their respective impedance and power ratings for peak performance.
