Obscure Sound — The heaviest track from Beatrix‘s upcoming album Vertigo, “Paranoid” grips with a moody sound propelled by haunting vocal introspection and piano-driven atmospherics. The “freaking out,” vocal escalation sends chills as the rhythms intensify, culminating in the ghostly multi-vocal “locking the door,” sequence. The momentum continues from there; the “nobody’s there,” vocal and accompanying guitars remind fondly of Radiohead. Obscure Sound — The self-titled EP from Portland, OR-based band Baby Grendel stirs with a dynamic stylishness — venturing from the string-laden chamber-folk beauty of “Child’s Howl” to the delectably raucous alt-rocker “Sidewalk.” The project was formed by Jonathan Suarez (Small Town Sci-Fi) and Joe Mengis (Eels, Portugal. The Man), who have been crafting this EP for two years. The aforementioned strings appear delightfully throughout, courtesy of performances by Patti King (The Shins), and Kyle Lockwood (Climber). Obscure Sound — Cincinnati-based band Trapt preview their upcoming album The Fall with a compelling new EP, entitled Teaser #2. Five album songs are included within, touting the band’s emotionally charged, hooky alt-rock sound. “Halo” is a consuming opener. “Thought I was a good man,” a resonating vocal call lets out, thematically gripping in struggles to forgive oneself, beckoning to “send me an angel; I need a light to guide me home.” The guitar-fronted arsenal, with sporadic piano touches, plays melodically alongside the confessional vocal spiritedness.
