DIAMOND DOGS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

David Bowie's final glam rock masterpiece (with some music touching upon soul and funk) was released on this date 50 years ago.

The album was the product of two distinct ideas - a musical based on a wild future in a post-apocalyptic city, and setting George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four to music.

The album hit UK #1 and AUS #3, spawning the hits 'Rebel Rebel' and 'Diamond Dogs'.

Significant reissues include Rykodisc in 1990 (two bonus tracks and the original, uncensored, artwork) and in 2004, a 2-disc version released by EMI/Virgin )the third in a series of 30th Anniversary 2CD Editions).

TONIGHT 40TH ANNIVERSARY

Following the massive sales of LET'S DANCE, Bowie said he wanted to "go further" with his next record, aiming to explore R&B, funk and reggae music.

Recording of the new album began in May 1984 at Le Studio in Quebec, Canada.

Despite relying heavily on cover songs, TONIGHT was another sales success. It bore the transatlantic top 10 hit BLUE JEAN, itself the inspiration for the Julien Temple-directed short film Jazzin' for Blue Jean, in which Bowie played the dual roles of romantic protagonist Vic and arrogant rock star Screaming Lord Byron.

Blue Jean was released Sept 10 and the album Sept 24. The following year, LOVING THE ALIEN was released as a single.
