About The Arthur Ransome Society

Founded in 1990, the Arthur Ransome Society (TARS) celebrates all things Ransome.  He wrote on many subjects but his most famous works are the series of 12 books following the adventures of children in the Swallows and Amazons series.  Films have been made of several of these.  Many of their activities are carried out by members today, camping, sailing, canoeing, walking, climbing, star gazing, wildlife watching, campcraft, even singing shanties around a campfire.  Indoor activities include puzzles and quizzes, making things, readings, scoffing and chatting.  Come and try some with us!

As a literary society we also celebrate and research his life and his other works.  Racundra’s First Cruise will be familiar to many yachtsmen, and Rod and Line to many fishermen.  His work as an international journalist is still of interest today “If you want to know what is going on in Egypt today read Ransome on Egypt” said a member recently.   If you are interested in learning more become a member from as little as £15. For more membership information, click here.

We have an international presence and the Swallows and Amazons books are translated into 18 languages.
