Navigation

You can navigate the site using clickable maps like the one on this page or the drop down menus. Smoo Cave At the eastern end of Durness is Smoo Cave. "Smoo" is a name thought to derive from the Old Norse "Smuga" which means "hiding place" and the name is applied to this end of the village and to the river, the Allt Smoo, which disappears into a sinkhole on the inland side of the A838, as well as to the cave itself. Smoo Cave came to public notice after Sir Walter Scott featured it in an account of the cruise around northern Scotland he undertook in 1814. ( More ...)

30 May 1833: The death of Sir John Malcolm, a soldier and diplomat during the expansion of the British Empire.

30 May 1875: The birth near Banff of Isabel Gunn, who as Isabel Kerr became a doctor and missionary who pioneered the treatment of leprosy in India.

30 May 1889: The birth near Kirkliston of Isabel Hutchison, the pioneering arctic traveller and author.

1 June 1841: The death in New York of Robert Allan, a weaver who became more widely known for the songs he composed and the poetry he wrote. He had arrived in New York on 25 May, to start a new life in the new world, and died six days later.
