Petite anecdote, comme tous les dimanches matins, je laisse mon téléphone en mode silence…pour pouvoir dormir jusqu’à tard. Hier, en me réveillant… j’avais 16 appels en absence. Toutes les vérités ne sont pas bonnes à dire. Certaines personnes m’ont appelé hier pour me dire exactement cela !
Pour la petite histoire…ce dossier a été primé dans le cadre des CNN Multichoice African Journalist Awards 2011.

Btw, est ce qu’il y a une difference entre jati et caste? Je pensais que jati etait le terme hindi pour caste, mais L’express Weekly de vendredi dernier semble faire une distinction entre les 2!

« Jati » est une notion qui est née de la pratique. Il y a 4 castes et des milliers de « jati » qui sont des sortes de subdivisions selon les métiers. « Chamar » par exemple, le mot tellement péjoratif à Maurice fait référence à un « jati », celui des tanneurs, en Inde. Autre exemple, à Maurice, « Lohar » est l’une des sous-castes (jati) au sein des Vaish. Lohar veut tout simplement dire « forgeron ». Etc etc etc

Very informative. I can’t understand why some disapproved of this. It is factual, and anyone who has knowledge of Hindu practises will agree with what has been written.
What extent does caste play a role in the lives of young Hindus in Mauritius? Will any of this matter in thirty years time when the 20 year olds are in the policy making positions?

L’express Dimanche se montre encore une fois,- et pas des moindres- un expert de la titraille, sans fond: pas empecheur de tourner en rond, mais dynamo de la confusion! Je m’explique. D’abord: « sans concession », ca veut dire quoi?(notez la un ton sarkozien non-voulu) en mes termes, sans concession veut dire organisation, documentation et surtout: ORDRE! Au lire de cet article, les faits historiques importants sont sublimes par un explicatif dilue… d’in oeil critique: la tournante le l’empreinte casteiste a Maurice porte un seul nom: Anerood et son combat contre l’intelligentsia bhramin. mais la encore, L’express fait du coeur de la question un membre insignifiant! aussi, l’amalgame de brahmin et maraz est une faute diplomatique grave, ou, pis encore, un subterfuge pour preserver cette caste de l’opinion publique. Fin mot l’histoire: L’EXpress aura fait du beau remplissage autour d’un papier, non signe…

Totally gutted by the words of Choonee. Especially the bit when he is saying « kioun dartay ho » i.e » qui faire ou peur ».. which can fairly be interpreted as » You are above the law »…Very Orwellian..Then again, since 1968 the hindus have been writing history and we simply cannot erase that in the name of contemporay political correctness. Just because ‘educated’ people does not want to get tagged as ‘racist’ etc….Everybody votes according to their ethnicity in Mauritius and nobody can change that. Even the MMM could not re-write history in 1982. This is just a myth that it did!!

Et M. Dulthummun a fait brûler un exemplaire de cette édition (photo en page 5 du Mauricien du 9 septembre 2010)… l’hiver est tellement rude pour certains qu’ils doivent satisfaire leur ego surdimensionné pour se chauffer…
Est-ce que celà sera diffusé ou censuré par la MBC? Que dirait l’IBA – où le monsieur est qualifié pour y sièger – sur cette affaire?
C’est Radio Plus qui diffuse, tout le monde qui interprète et l’express qui paie les pots cassés par Choonee! Qui se croit fort en allant chercher réparation auprès des tribunaux: qui cherche trouve, dit-on…

I have been following the discussions upon this topic with interest for some time now..Choonee made a blunder by having been able to say something in the presence of media which everybody else says in private,in whatever association or cultural section involved.
The second part is more intriguing where some kind of defence mechanism is put in place for choonee, with all kind of nonsense such as threatening the press and burning and so on..The real question is why those guys are doing so??? Just trying to get political favours or hidden agenda would not justify the massive support those guys have!! The history of Mauritius, even if short, provides us some clues to this answer!
There is some kind of obsession of « national unity »!! what does it mean exactly?? I can’t find a single example of any country where there isn’t divisions/fractions/differences(Just look at belgium!!). Personally, I find that Mauritius is a quite good place to live in terms of inter-ethnic collaboration.
Finally, Rabin’s article does not just condemn one political party, but almost all of the major ones. So, again , what the big fuss is about!!
To conclude, in 1 or 2 weeks time, there would be another event and people would forget about this episode. I’ll be very happy with that as I find that there are more interesting news to deal with(our percentage of national debt, the new gene NDBM 1, etc). Just hope choonee would keep quite for some time!!

Tomtom, for me personally, as a member of a minority group in Mauritius, my concerns are neither what Choonee has said or believes, nor national unity. My concerns are that the institutions of the state have become the institutions of a particular caste. I am worried that Choonee’s comment on a prioritisation of the needs of a particular group of individuals has become a reality. Should the state not provide services equally to all its citizens? Should the public service not employ individuals to positions based on merit and not properties determined by birth into a family of a particular background, a property uncontrollable by any of us? It may not be the case, or rather the extent of this influence may only be the higher posts of government, but the doubts will prevail.
Of course, it may have just been a blunder. Perhaps he wanted to impress the boss, or perhaps the moment of the occasion got to him. After all, there are few people in Mauritius who can truly claim not to have made a racist comment, but then these people are not government ministers. He should have known better and it shows a vulnerability that a minister should simply not have.
I agree with much of what has been said, people will have moved on in a few weeks time, but the underlying resentment will still be there and unfortunately so will these so called socio-cultural organisations.

Reading through this blog provides food for thought… and for fight, if not more. anyhow, it would be a good idea to explore divisions among other communities as well. As a muslim, I am quite ashamed of the way my own ethnic group…or religion, is itself class-ridden. For instance, a good question to be posed is: is national unity possible if we are already divided among our « like »… or « nou bann »? Is communalism not just a projection of inherent non-coercion? where is causality and correlation? i would have so liked Mr Rabin to explore these ideas in L’Express…for, even if this paper can be flawed in some aspects, it remains one of the only expression of freedom in the Mauritian media-space…

Bienvenu sur le blog Jay. Vous semblez ne connaître absolument rien de cet aspect de la sociologie hindoue à Maurice. Pour votre éducation, veuillez consulter cet article.
Des personnes ayant une profonde connaissance du phénomène des castes à Maurice, certains ont même écrit des livres à ce sujet, n’ont rien eu à dire sur la classification des castes dont nous avons fait état. Alors conseil d’ami…allez vous documenter avant de vous hasarder à commenter de manière aussi lapidaire. Sinon vous risquez de vous ridiculiser…
