Who is Buffalo Woman? Serial killer trial hears of police efforts to identify victim

WINNIPEG - In mid-March 2022, a young Indigenous woman stood outside Winnipeg's Salvation Army and spoke with a man who invited her back to his home.

Wearing a reversible Baby Phat branded jacket and a cloth face mask, she would later board a bus with the man and head to his apartment in the North Kildonan neighbourhood.

The woman was the first victim of serial killer Jeremy Skibicki.

In the two years since her slaying, police have been unable to identify her or find her remains.

UK Labour leader Keir Starmer woos undecided voters with a vow to safeguard national security

LONDON (AP) — British opposition leader Keir Starmer made his first major speech of the U.K. election campaign Monday, telling undecided voters that they can trust his Labour Party to safeguard the country’s economy, borders and security. Starmer is the favorite to win the July 4 election, with polls giving Labour a double-digit lead over the governing Conservatives under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. But many electors remain undecided, and Starmer sought to address a perception that the left-of-center Labour Party is weaker on defense and security than the center-right Conservatives. “The very foundation of any good government is economic security, […]

The last thing 20-year-old Ben Cameron remembers before his car flipped into a ditch on Highway 18 Wednesday morning was daydreaming to music.

The next thing he knew, he was upside down in a ditch, and the car was filling up with water.

Afraid he would drown, he had to act quickly — he popped his seatbelt and started pulling himself out of the open driver side window. Then, in an incredible stroke of luck, a Killarney RCMP officer on patrol nearby jumped into the water and pulled him to safety.

He was covered in blood and immediately fitted in a neck brace and sent to hospital, where he learned he had only suffered minor cuts and bruises and was quickly released. Considering the nature of the accident, RCMP told him he was lucky to be alive.

Duo delivers more than just laughs in Hacks

At the centre of Hacks (currently streaming on Crave) is a boomer-versus-millennial relationship. If this saga of 70-something standup star Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her much-put-upon 20-something comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) just played the age gap for laughs, the show would still be watchable. There’s plenty of zingy banter about the women’s very different skill sets and world views. Deborah is weirdly insouciant about climate change, is still trying to figure out gender fluidity, and — of course — struggles with memes. Meanwhile Ava, who came of age in the 21st century, finds it hard to imagine […]

At least 2,000 feared dead in Papua New Guinea landslide. These are some challenges rescuers face

David Rising, The Associated Press 6 minute read Updated: 6:32 AM CDT

BANGKOK (AP) — The Papua New Guinea government said more than 2,000 people are believed to have been buried alive in a landslide in the South Pacific island nation, after the side of a mountain came down in the early hours of Friday morning when the village of Yambali was asleep. The settlement is located in a restive and remote area in the interior of the poor, rural nation off the northern coast of Australia, making search and rescue efforts complicated and hazardous. The government death toll is roughly triple the U.N. estimate of 670 killed. The remains of only […]

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, TikTok continues to redefine the way we share content, connect with others, and even navigate the professional sphere. Among the latest trends to emerge on the platform is “Quit-Tok” — a viral phenomenon where employees announce their resignations live for the world to see. What started as a quirky expression of individuality has quickly become a cultural phenomenon, sparking conversations about workplace dynamics, career transitions, and the power of social media in shaping our professional narratives. Quit-Tok videos typically feature employees filming themselves in their workplace environment, often with a resignation letter or […]

EU-Israel relations take a nosedive as Spain, Ireland set to formally recognize a Palestinian state

Raf Casert, The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: 6:32 AM CDT

BRUSSELS (AP) — Relations between the European Union and Israel took a nosedive on the eve of the diplomatic recognition of a Palestinian state by EU members Ireland and Spain, with Madrid suggesting sanctions should be considered against Israel for its continued attacks in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Israeli Foreign Minister Katz told Spain that its consulate in Jerusalem will not be allowed to help Palestinians. At the same time, the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, a Spaniard, threw his full weight to support the International Criminal Court, whose prosecutor is seeking an arrest warrant against Prime […]

The Canadian Elite Basketball League dialed up the excitement at Canada Life Centre Friday night.

With a roaring crowd of 9,116 urging them on the Winnipeg Sea Bears rallied from a five-point deficit at the start of target time, capped by Alex Campbell’s corner three-pointer, to beat the Scarborough Shooting Stars 109-106.

“It was the first game, new team and 1,000 points and all that — God is good,” said Campbell, a former Vancouver Bandit who finished with nine points and became the first Canadian to reach the 1,000-point milestone in his CEBL career.

The Stars had a golden opportunity to win the game, needing Jackson Rowe to hit only one of two free throws to reach the target score of 107 points.
