When it gets too loud and/or rowdy at The Bitter End (and it does...) this is a great place to crash. The environment is low-key and everybody is pretty chill on any given night. They do get the overflow of douchebags from the Rockit Room on the weekends, but hey, Fridays and Saturdays are when the douchebags invade the Richmond, so deal with it.
Drinks are cheap, and the bartenders are very friendly. My friend and I joked about the popcorn machine in the corner. The bartender asked us if we wanted popcorn, we said yes, and she actually went to make some! It wasn't a busy night... she risked us not even eating the popcorn, and then of course she would have to clean it again, but she made it for us anyway! That was awesome. Of course we had like five trays of popcorn. Each. It was some damned good popcorn.
After reading some of the reviews on here, it sounds like they have some pretty awesome events/games/contests going on. We stumbled in on the end of some Comedy Wednesday thing one time.
One complaint: They were out of Guinness one time, and then the other time their Guinness tap was broken. But I can adjust... it was just a little disappointing.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Justin G.San Francisco, CA12685Jul 12, 2011
Dirty Trix is fun.
The bartenders are fun.
The owners are fun.
The regulars are fun.
The pool is fun.
The entire experience is fun.
It's not a pretty room It's charming, in a dark and deep sort of way, filled with some of the best, worst, and weirdest of the Richmond District.
And now that I think about, they probably have the BEST bartenders in SF.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Andrew M.San Francisco, CA79836Sep 21, 2012
HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE BAR IN THE RICHMOND!
The bartenders are your best friend the moment you enter the place. Drinks are cheap and it's always a good time with good people... any time of the day.
If you get the chance, I HIGHLY suggest checking out the comedy nights. The open mic on Wednesdays is the longest and most eclectic show in the city (5 hours and something like 50 comics each week). It showcases comics ranging from awkward first-timers to seasoned professionals (Robin Williams stopped by and did a set one night... unbelievable.)
They also have a show on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. If I have any advice for anyone wanting to check those out it'd be "SHOW UP EARLY!!!!" The place fills up quick, and by fill up I mean you can't even squeeze your way through the door. The comedy is top notch and is basically the same caliber of anything you'd see at Punchline or Cobbs FOR FREE!!!!! Also the groovy dance party that happens to break out after the show can't be beat.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Roy N.San Francisco, CA2370487214Dec 28, 2010Updated review
This is really a great neighborhood bar. Fun place to shoot pool too. The pool table used to be free and then temporarily was at 50 cents, but is now back to free again. The cues are the worst I've ever seen, but hey, it's free!
Great bartenders and an interesting cast of patrons makes for some fun times. Recently, after dealing with work and my crazy dad situation, I was shooting pool and actually forgot my leather jacket which I left hanging on a hook next to the pool table. After losing countless leather jackets in bars over the years, I figured there was no way in hell that thing would still be there when I went back the next day, especially considering that it had been on a Thursday night.
Popped in around lunch time the next day, just to ask and almost fell over in shock when they told me that it was still there, right where I left it. Truly, truly amazing!
Nothing fancy, but this is truly the best bar in the area.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0Nov 5, 2010Previous reviewPeople sometimes ask me why I love barhopping so much.
Remember when you were younger and dreamed of hopping aboard your own spacecraft and flying off to far and distant worlds in another universe to interact with local beings of different backgrounds? Well, for me, that's what barhopping is all about. Each individual bar is like it's own different world and no two are a like so every new place you hit is a fun, alcohol-fueled journey of discovery. I am a brave explorer setting out to experience all that this alcohol universe has to offer, both good and bad. It's a dirty job, but hey, someone has got to do it.
With that having been said, I ended up here. What a great bar! Not sure what it's like late night or on weekends, but was here after work last night (Thurs) and had a fantastic time. The bartenders, Tim and Lisa, were downright awesome and the patrons, all of different ages and backgrounds were equally cool.
There was a gorgeous, bright blue, freshly re-covered pool table there and the instant I saw it, I knew I'd be in for some great pool. Ended up getting on the table and was undefeated for a couple hours as everyone came up to play me. Just couldn't lose until I intentionally started missing while playing a new friend, just to finally get off the table. It was one of those nights where your game is on and the balls just magically go down. I noticed an unusually high amount of people coming in with their own cues and joked about this most certainly being shark-infested waters. Turns out the reason is that the house cues are so lousy...some of the worst I've seen in a bar. Definitely due for replacement years ago. Regardless, the table was most playable and I had an incredible time drinking and making new friends.
Drinks were strong and reasonably priced and when I first walked in, I was surprised to see three buckets of KFC out on the table. I asked about it and found out that the house picked it up for the patrons for happy hour. Original, Spicy, and Grilled...very cool! Everybody loved the bird porn videos on my phone of my two lovebirds Jamie and Julie going at it too. Hiliarious!
Truly a most fun and memorable evening. I will be back. - Rodney P.San Francisco, CA6296512May 3, 2009
When the Dirty Trix Saloon was the Dog's Bolix, I would go there maybe once a week or so (well, typically when either Alex, Annie, Joanna, or Kateri were working...luh dem girls!)
The new owners, Lee and Kevin, have transformed the place from a dive bar filled with pugnacious Irishmen into a neighborhood hangout that is far from pretentious. The formula is simple: cheap drinks, down to earth bartenders, a cool jukebox, and a diverse clientele. Dare I say it is gradually becoming my favorite place to kick it in the Inner Richmond.
In closing, I implore you to check it out and take advantage of their complementary "guru services": get some sound advice on what drink is best for you from Justin (I recommend his Michter's Sazerac by the by), a few words about how to improve your love life from Damon, recommendations for the hottest dance clubs in the city from Brittany, old school hip hop recommendations from Yoyo, and let Timmy and Josh get you tore back to the point where you can barely remember your name.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Melissa Q.San Francisco, CA911245Aug 7, 2009
Great White for me. Anchor Summer Brew for him. On-tap, of course. Really, that right there is enough for 5 stars.
Then--they let my doggy, Walter Chorizo, the dachshund, join us for beers!!! My beer, my boy, and my baby...LOVE IT!
Great and friendly service. Dog bowl by the door, though they gave me a glass so Walter could drink at our booth in the back. Great music on the jukebox. My only complaint is that, now that I've moved out of the Richmond, I've finally found what would have been my local watering hole.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Heather K.Half Moon Bay, CA14689031611Dec 16, 2013
Ehh, what can you say....it's a dive bar so don't have high expectations and you won't be disappointed. I've been here only once, for the comic night, so that's what I'll be basing my review on.
Helpful hint -- if you want to sign up for a mic spot and would like to get onstage before last call, arrive early in the evening (like around 7:30) to put your name on the signup list.
Pros:
Wednesday night is stand-up comedy open mic.
Drinks are good and the bartender (at least last Wednesday night) was hilarious. 5 stars for Pookie.
Location is easy to find and parking is surprisingly not that big a battle.
The crowd was incredibly friendly and welcoming to the comics performing. No booing or heckling, even when the performances were about as appealing as cold diarrhea on a paper plate. A good supportive environment for those who are just starting out.
The MC, Andrew I think, was funny. An excellent choice for running the show. I think I laughed more at him than most of the performances!
Not to make it sound like the comics were all bad. Some were absolutely hilarious! There was an obvious mix of skill and experience levels.
Cons:
Cash only.
Drinks are too expensive for the setting. I'll gladly pay $9 for a martini or $6 for a draft beer at Ruby Skye, but in a sticky dive bar off Geary it doesn't seem quite right.
The open mic was kind of disorganized....some people were allowed to go well over their time limit; others who were way too fucking drunk/high to do anything other than mumble and laugh at themselves should have been removed from the stage but were allowed to stay up there wasting everyone's time. One dude, I think his name was Rodney, cut into the early lineup and was a total idiot. Too drunk to make any sense and not funny at all.
Ever seen "Trainspotting?" Remember the scene with The Worst Toilet in Scotland? The bathrooms here are pretty fucking close to that. FUCKING DISGUSTING. I would rather go outside and pee in the street.
Soooooo....not my first choice for a bar in the City but that doesn;t mean it's bad for everyone.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0 - Em L.Sacramento, CA24989944Jan 6, 2012
My friends, it's a 5 star review.
It's a neighborhood bar with an extra zing. The bar is long, there are tables in the back, apparently free pool and an excellent digital jukebox. We were treated to an hour of sing along Stevie Wonder. Not my fave, but somehow, it worked. I could dance like soul train's #1s and no one batted an eye. Drinks are good. Bartender's genuine. And the patrons are having a good time.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jay C.San Francisco, CA151131Aug 10, 2010
Had a FANTASTIC time here last night.
Damon the bar tender is a great guy. Drinks were cheap cheap cheap and the pool is free.
You know you have a special place when you have a FREE pool table and you don't get a bunch of douchebags ruling the table and not giving it up. We just asked if we could have the next game and the guys who had been on the table gave it up right away, even though it looked like they might play again.
Not so sure about the blue lights, though. All around, great bar with a silly nameHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
