Brian, my taller and follicularly challenged better half, and I were in the garage the other evening preparing to plant some new blackberry and blueberry bushes we’d ordered when I was summoned to greet an unexpected guest.

My mother died 46 years ago and, by today’s measure, she died young — 58. But, as premature as her passing may seem, her span was four years beyond the life expectancy of a woman born in Arkansas in 1920, as was she.

The herd gets thinner as more entertainment legends cross that big stage in the sky. Duane Eddy, who provided some of the coolest guitar licks known to man, is the latest joining the greatest band in the universe. He follows Dickey Betts, whose guitar playing gave the Allman Brothers Band its unique southern rock ’n’ roll sound. No doubt the Pearly Gates are rockin’ now.

I mentioned in my last column that we had been treating ourselves to movie nights that consist of old Hollywood movies with stars such as Cary Grant, Irene Dunne and Ingrid Bergman. I salivate over the decadent fashions of these eras; back when class was in style. Hats, trousers, heels, curled hair… standards just seemed higher back then and we pine for the days of morality and class and decency, but I digress. Anyway, I suddenly realized that I became interested in one aspect of all these movies…

While surfing through Facebook last week, I saw a post about about an upcoming citizens' meeting. The post on Phil Friese's Facebook page appeared to be written by his wife, Benicia, and read in part, "There are so many nice friendly people here, we can all work together and make it a great place to be. Please come to the meeting at Hot Shots on May 16th at 6:30 to have a voice. Bring a lawn chair."
