If you build it, they will stay: Ending Ottawa’s biotech brain drain

Ottawa has earned a global reputation as a vibrant city for medical research and innovation. But if it wants to keep its intellectual capital in the nation’s capital, more lab space and private investment will be needed.

In an interview from the series “Better healthcare starts here”, Virica CEO Jean-Simon Diallo and NeuroBot CEO Dane Bedward emphasize the importance of bridging the gap between discovery and market.

They believe uOttawa’s new Advanced Medical Research Centre (AMRC) will serve as this much-needed bridge by incubating next-generation health technologies and treatments. Scheduled to open in 2026, the AMRC will welcome hundreds of researchers and employees from the Faculty of Medicine, along with accelerator and incubator companies and regional partners.
