Healthy Travel Tips ~ Video ~ whether you’re getting on a plane or going down the street!

Let’s face it, in our busy culture, it often feels like we’re on the road. We’re carpooling the kids, we’re shlepping them to after-school activities, we’re doing our household errands. We are in motion!

This kind of lifestyle calls for us to step up to the plate of self care. We have to prioritize ourselves or we just can’t be there for everyone else.

This video tells you how I take care of myself when I travel, and how you can do the same, even if you’re just traveling to the playground with your kids!

Super Easy Raw Cacao Truffles and…Sleep

  • If you want to feel great – get enough sleep!
  • If you want lose weight or maintain your weight – get enough sleep!
  • If you want to look fabulous – get enough sleep!

Yup, I totally know that and teach that. But last week, I had a couple of sleepless nights. I did all my super sleep tapes and relaxations but there was no sleep to be had. Of course the next day I was tired. I needed a pick me up. I don’t drink coffee so that wasn’t an option. So, I whipped these up… (read to the end of the blog to find out if it worked!):

Super Easy Raw Cacao Truffles

Put all ingredients in food processor and blend until thoroughly mixed. Form into balls and enjoy!

  • 3 Pitted Dates
  • 1 Tablespoon Raw Coconut Butter
  • 1 Tablespoon Raw Cacao Powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Bee Pollen (optional -it does impart a strong honey flavor,  but I wanted the superfood energy hit that bee pollen gives me)
Form into balls or any shape you like.
They’d be delicious rolled in raw coconut flakes.

After wizzing them up the truffle mix is crumbly, but form a ball and they'll hold together.

The truffles did their pick-me-up job, in fact a little too well! These little raw truffles pack a cacao caffeine punch.  I’m very sensitive to caffeine anyway, but these tasty morsels kept me awake all day and well into the next night!
So, what’s a gal to do when, yet again, she hasn’t slept well (besides the obvious – a nap!)?  I reached for a much gentler stimulant –  my wonderful Goji Berry Tea. I slept very well the next night.

Super Simple and Scrumptious Asian Salad – with a great kick!

I have a wonderful guest chef for you today!

My sister-in-law Petra Kuehl is a total gourmet chef, but she’s not the kind that comes from chef school. She just has it in her taste buds. She  can taste something and tell you every subtle spice and herb that’s in there. I call her a super-taster. I love being in the kitchen with her, she inspires me and feeds me well!

Watch this video to see how easy it is to make this Super Simple and Scrumptious Asian Salad.

Super Simple & Scrumptious Asian Salad

The salad was inspired by a salad Petra saw in Ani Phyo‘s Raw Asian cook book.

Salad:

  • Big head of Romaine Lettuc
  • 1/4 cup diced Onion

Dressing:

Stir together:

  • 3 Tablespoons Toasted Sesame Oil (or not toasted)
  • 1 Tablespoon Tamari – I use wheat free tamari
  • 1 Tablespoon Maple Syrup or Raw Honey (If you are using honey use less because it’s so sweet)
  • 1/4 Teaspooon Ground Cayenne Pepper (to taste)
Dress salad and enjoy!

Want to get in the kitchen with me and learn how to make easy raw food!

My next class is:

Sept. 18th at 3:30 in the Boston Area.

2 Yoga breaths for more joy and energy! ~ Video ~

I’m leaving paradise. : (

Every summer my kids, husband and I visit my mom at her cottage north of Toronto. While I’m there I get into a fabulous groove of doing yoga on the deck every morning.

It’s bliss.

I want to share a bit of that bliss with you and teach you how you can take it into each and every day. I’ll be taking it with me as we head back to city living in Boston.

Watch this video and follow along. Do these super simple breathing exercises with me to see what a difference 2 minutes can make.

Why and How-To unplug from technology ~ Video

I admit it, I’m addicted to technology. I text, tweet, post on facebook, have an iphone, ipad and of course a laptop. I’m completely plugged in!

…until I unplugged. I went on a canoe/camping trip in Algonquin Park which is in Northern Ontario and spent four challenging but blissful days canoeing. Check out the video to see gorgeous Opeongo Lake and hear about my unplugging experience.

It was four days without my technology and without connection to the internet (I did bring my camera!).

Strayer and Atchley – both professors who study the use of technology – believe that heavy technology use can inhibit deep thought and cause anxiety, and that getting out into nature is a good antidote.

I learned from experience – this is true!

Here are the benefits I experienced from being unplugged:

  • I was more relaxed.
  • My thoughts were more creative.
  • I was more aware of my surroundings.
  • I felt myself slow down internally.
  • I was more in the moment.
  • I slept more.
  • I played more.

Here are a few ways to go media-free, or to reduce your media involvement.

  • Go away where you just can’t get cell reception or internet access – this worked for me.
  • Set specific time(s) of day to answer your emails, instead of checking throughout the day.
  • Don’t answer your phone, let people leave a message and then call them back when you want to, instead of being in “respond-mode” constantly.
  • Set boundaries around when you won’t text – like at meal time, when your in a conversation with someone – or while driving!
  • Just claim a day, let your friends and family know, and unplug totally! They’ll all be there tomorrow!

It’s taking time for ourselves, stepping out of “on-mode” and taking a break from responding to everyone else that brings us home to our self and makes us a Smokin’ Hot Mom!

Some cool articles about unplugging:

College students unplug for a day

Professors unplug for 3 days in nature

A couple of easy delicious tomato recipes

I took this luscious tomato pic in my mom's garden

August is the only time to eat a tomato! They don’t taste like this any other time of the year.

In August tomatoes don’t really need a thing on them – they’re that good. But sometimes…a little sea salt is nice.  Hmmm, and a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar is lovely, and really it’s fantastic to add a sprinkle of fresh basil. But tomatoes in August are truly a delicacy on their own. I especially love those little orange ones – they’re like candy!

However, in case you want to dress your tomato up a bit. Here’s a few past posts to inspire you.

This month I wrote a tasty article for the Natural Awakenings magazine. Here’s the original post.

Purslane – yummy greens with omega fatty acids!

I adore farmer’s markets and wherever, I go I seek them out.

This week I visited the Orangeville, Ontario Farmer’s Market, and loved what I found at the Plowshare Farm stand. They’re conscientious, organic growers. You can learn more about them at www.PlowShareFarm.WordPress.com.

They had Purslane!

It’s not a veggie I find often in stores or even farmer’s markets. And it’s not a veg that I knew a lot about, so I bought three big bunches (being the vegetable enthusiast that I am), did my research, and then chopped it up and added it raw to my salad. I then quickly sat down to tell you about it because it’s so good and so good for you.

  • Purslane is high in Omega Fatty Acids. That’s the healthy fat that we all need. It’s a great vegan source for this fat (normally found in fish oil).
  • It’s very high in antioxidants.
  • It’s rich in vitamins and minerals – but so are all green leafy vegetables!
  • Purslane is often found wild, but can easily be grown in a garden. It grows like a weed – which is often how people perceive it.
  • You can eat it raw, throw it in a stew, soup or sautee it with a bit of garlic.
  • It’s delicious!
