Interstate 70 has reopened but continues to have lingering delays west of Morrison this evening, hours after two fatal motorcycle crashes less than a mile apart about noon today.

A rider on one bike was killed and the driver of the other died. No names have been released pending notification of next of kin, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The first crash happened at 11:46 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 in Mount Vernon Canyon, which is about 2 miles west of E-470.

A woman was thrown from the motorcycle when the driver lost control, according to the state patrol. The rider was taken to a local hospital, but details on his condition have not been released.

At 11:49 a.m., a second motorcycle approaching from the crash site from the west rear-ended a vehicle on the highway, and the lone rider of the bike was killed.

Traffic backed up for miles this afternoon as authorities investigated. The interstate reopened at about 4:15 p.m.
