For the past few months Atelier Olschinsky (previously) has been cranking out these stunning illustrations which he titles, simply, Cities and Plants. The complex hybrid of digital illustration and architecture is stunning, and several are available as fine art prints. Head over to Behance to take a deep dive, there are literally dozens of them.

Picturing the creative process

Creative process - full

The creative process changes by person and project, but there are obstacles and steps along the way that you tend to pass with each. Graphic designer Melike Turgut maps his own process. Start from the inside (research, reading, and learning), and make your way out (questions, ideas, and refinement).

Though I’m enjoying numerous photos by Nicholas Kennedy Sitton, these two twisty architectural shots really jumped out at me. (via fasels suppe)

Patch Schematics – The Aesthetics of Constraint / Best Practices [Theory]

Taken from CreativeApplications.Net
Click here to read from source.

Visual programming languages, languages that create programs by the manipulation of graphical elements, as opposed to specifying lines of text, have seen an increased popularity in recent years both in audio and video synthesis. Some of the more well-known environments, ones that are regularly used for projects that are featured on CAN,  include VVVV (real-time motion graphics and physical IO)  MAX/MSP (real-time music and multimedia), Pure Data (ostensibly an open source equivalent of MAX/MSP) and Quartz Composer (video synthesis for MAC).

Visual programming owes its many of its conventions for the representation of information and programs from Flowcharts – a lesser used term for these kinds of environments is Data-flow Programming. VPL’s date back to the late 60′s. A good example is the GraIL system (GRaphical Input Language) a flowchart language entered on a graphics tablet developed by the Rand Corporation in 1969.

Revealing the Facebook Social Graph in Physical Reality

Taken from information aesthetics

facebook_connections.jpg
Connections for Facebook [obscuradigital.com] developed by Obscura Digital was a physical installation demonstrated during F8, Facebook’s developer’s conference.

Conference attendees were identified through their RFID-enabled event badge, so the projected visualization could access their Facebook profiles. The radial bar graphs surrounding an attendee was dynamically constructed from that person’s complete graph data. Each blue bar represents a friends, a green bar maps to an interest, and the other colors represent various types of interests, such as books, movies, music, sports teams, arts, and so on. The connecting lines between people represent the shared connections, so that their relative density indicates the level of connectedness.

Vasco Mourao is an architect and illustrator originally from Portugal who now lives and works in Barcelona. His densely illustrated cities and structures are drawn entirely by hand and while all are of course fictional places, they often incorporate real buildings. For instance, in the most dense piece above entitled New Yorker one can find the Chrysler building, the Met, the Whitney, and the Guggenheim among others—it’s like architectural Where’s Waldo! Another piece, Is it me or is Barcelona falling apart?, includes a wide variety of less iconic structures Mourao found around the city, and the last two illustrations are available as limited edition prints from his shop. Thanks for sharing your work with Colossal, Vasco!

Revoid.Js [Javascript]

Taken from CreativeApplications.Net

We have a new feature javascript running on CAN:  Revoid.js by Gwen Vanhee. Click top right corner button for demo.

Small experiments with the HTML5 canvas-element and javascript. Build from scratch to learn while playing and test javascript’s performance on mobile devices. Landscape is an animated 3D grid with a slowly fading trail, where user interaction creates infinite, always changing compositions. Terrain mapping takes image data from a picture and maps it to a 3D grid. The y-position of the gidpoints are based on color values (r+g+b). In Tiles a small 100×100 square is animated and tiled in the background, user interaction controls color and size of the circles. Patterns emerge when the circles are small enough (moving the mouse up and down).

A brief in under 140 characters

Somehow efficient, but should not be considered as always true. And nice idea, indeed.

tweet3

This is a nice idea. THEY is a creative agency in Amsterdam, and they are looking for an intern. They (hehe) have come up with a nice idea to get submissions. Using twitter they have posted three briefs that people can respond to. As the say on their twitter account… “a briefing should be brief. anything over 140 characters = bullshit. submit ur answer to a briefing as Reply or DM. best idea wins a 6mth paid internship”.

Check it out here
