2023/24:
Crystal Palace (a)
Newcastle return to Premier League action this evening against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. It's a non-televised, 8pm start.
Team:
Joe Willock will
play no further part in the remaining games this season, as he recuperates
from
an achilles problem. A similar decision
has
been made with back injury victim Lewis Miley.
Callum Wilson has now returned to full training and is set for a place on the
bench. He's netted two of our last three goals away to Palace in the
PL.
Nick Pope, Miggy Almiron, Matt
Targett, Joelinton and Kieran
Trippier are still sidelined, Sandro Tonali remains unavailable due to
suspension and
Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are both long-term absentees with
ACL injuries.
The immediate threat of suspension was
lifted from Bruno
Guimaraes after the 32 game mark
was reached against Spurs.
It's still theoretically
possible that he could earn a three match ban by reaching 15
bookings, but to do that he'd have to be yellow-carded in all six of
our remaining PL games.

CPFC:
Sam Johnstone, Cheick Doucoure, Marc Guehi, Rob Holding and
Jefferson Lerma are all sidelined.
Ahead of our visit, the Eagles registered a 5-2 home win over West Ham on
Sunday - their largest win of the season. That followed their 1-0
success at Liverpool last week and is the first time they've managed
back to back PL wins this season.
On home territory in 2023/24 so far, Oliver Glasner's side have won
five, drawn four and lost seven. As yet, they've failed to win
consecutive PL matches at Selhurst Park this season.

Stats:
Assuming he features, Elliot Anderson will make his 50th
senior competitive appearance for United in all competitions (12
starts). He's still to score a goal.
With four away games still to play, Newcastle's tally of 26 PL
goals on the road is the seventh highest they've achieved in 29
seasons of playing in that competition:
2001/02 scored 34 (19 away
games)
2022/23 scored 32 (19 away games)
1993/94 scored 31 (21 away games)
1995/96 scored 28 (19 away games)
2002/03 scored 27 (19 away games)
2011/12 scored 27 (19 away games)
2023/24 scored 26 (15 away games)
Since Christian Benteke beat Karl
Darlow at Selhurst Park in October 2021, Palace have failed to score
a goal against United in all five league and cup meetings - a run of 484
minutes without conceding.

Europe: latest
Assuming that the Premier League misses out on an additional fifth
Champions League place available due to restructuring of the
competition next season, qualification for Europe in 2024/25 looks
like this, as much as we're able to discern:
There are seven guaranteed European spots; four in the Champions
League, two in the Europa League and one in the Conference League.
Those were originally allocated as follows:
PL 1st-4th in Champions League
PL 5th in Europa League
FA Cup winners in Europa League
Carabao Cup winners in Conference League
Liverpool currently have the Conference League place as Carabao Cup
winners, but will take a Champions League place if they finish in
the Premier League top four, which looks almost guaranteed.
That frees up the Conference League place to the team finishing
sixth in the Premier League.
The FA Cup winners take a Europa League place - unless they have
earned a Champions League place by virtue of a top four Premier
League finish.
If Manchester City win the FA Cup and finish in the top four of the
Premier League, they will enter the Champions League.
The sixth place finishers would go into the Europa League spot
reserved for Manchester City, with the Conference League spot
occupied by the team finishing seventh.
If Manchester United win the FA Cup, they'll take a Europa League
place unless they finish in the top four and collect a Champions
League slot.
Should they finish in the Conference League position, they would
take the Europa League spot resulting from a Wembley success
instead.
If Manchester United finished eighth and therefore only qualified for
Europe by winning the FA Cup, the team in seventh spot wouldn't gain
entry to any European competition.
Aston Villa have qualified for the semi-finals of the Europa
Conference League (known as the UEFA Conference League next season).
If they won that competition, they would occupy an additional spot
in the Europa League reserved for the Conference winners only -
regardless of nationality.
Should Villa snag a Champions League or Europa League spot via their
Premier League finishing spot though, the Europa League place
reserved for them as Conference League winners would not be
reallocated to another Premier League team.

Sunday saw Feyenoord defeat NEC
Nijmegen 1-0 to win the Dutch Cup Final, giving on-loan Magpie Yankuba
Minteh the first trophy of his senior career.
However, the Gambian-born 19 year-old wasn't on the field in De
Kuip at full time - following his 72nd minute dismissal after two
bookings inside three minutes.
Feyenoord were 1-0 up at the time and managed to hold on to
their advantage to lift the trophy - a rather happier Minteh
collecting his winner's medal.
Update:
Asian Cup
bid ends
With United's Garang Kuol in
the squad, Sunday saw Australia bow out of the U23 Asian Cup
in Qatar after failing to win any of their three group stage ties.
Following a 0-0 draw against Jordan and a 0-1 defeat by Indonesia,
the Olyroos needed victory over hosts Qatar in Doha on Sunday to
progress.
Following 21 minute and 15 minute substitute outings, Kuol was again
named on the bench. Introduced on 69 minutes with brother Alou, he
was unable to inspire Australia to a goal and the game finished 0-0.
The top three
finishers in the sixteen team competition earn a place in the
Olympic Football tournament in Paris this summer. The side that finishes fourth enters a qualification playoff.
U18s:

in last-gasp loss
Wolves U18s 1 Newcastle U18s 0
Following their dramatic 4-3 home
win over Liverpool on Monday night, United's U18 side were defeated
in second half added time on Saturday.
After a delayed start at the Wolves training ground, neither side
could conjure up a first half goal - but both went in at the
interval a man down.
The hosts lost Josh Gidaree to a straight red card on 17 minutes for
illegally halting Newcastle's Matty Taylor as the last man back. Fouls by
visiting midfielder Mattheos Ferreira on 20 and 29 minutes were then
deemed as bookable offences by referee Brandon Scaife.
Still scoreless going into second half added time, United defender
Harry Powell blocked a goalbound shot with his hand and became the
second Magpie be dismissed.
That left Dani Angel with the task of taking the resultant penalty
and the Spanish youth international forward beat Adam Harrison to
secure all three points for Wolves.
Team: A.Harrison, Bloomer (Epia 69), Durrant, Johnson,
Palmer, Wooster (Mills 89), Ferreira, Donaldson, O'Donovan, Taylor (Alabi
75), H.Powell.
Subs n/u: Jones, Old.
Booked: Ferriera, Epia
Dismissed: Ferreira, H.Powell
Newcastle gave an U18 debut to Michael Mills at the age of 15 years
and three months. The winger was signed from Port Vale last summer.
Also appearing for the first time at this level was fellow
substitute Aaron Epia - a defender who was with
Everton.
Update:
Sports Direct fail again
A week after The Competition Appeal Tribunal ruled that a Sports
Direct claim against Newcastle United was insufficient to merit the
granting of an injunction, Friday saw an appeal of that decision
rejected by them:
"the Tribunal does not consider that the appeal has any
real prospect of success."
Earlier: The case will proceed to trial unless an alternative solution can be
reached, with no delay to the June home kit launch permissible,
regardless of whether said trial has taken place by then.
Sports Direct are challenging the club's plans to sell next
season's shirts themselves and via retailer JD Sports - the latter
gaining an exclusive licence.
Earlier: details of next season's Adidas kit
releases came out during the tribunal, including a home kit
launch on June 7th, the away kit in July and a third kit in August.
Figures disclosed during the tribunal also suggest that the
Adidas production run is around 375,000 shirts.
Latest:
Staveley statement
Update from Amanda Staveley via social media:
"Just arrived back from
Saudi and noticed a lot of messages from fans concerned that I had
stepped down from my role as a Director of Newcastle United.
"I have not - the changes made last week were purely
administrative, to non-trading subsidiaries. After the takeover,
Jamie and I stepped in as directors of all companies until we could
build an executive team.
"We remain on the ‘top-co’
and the Board. I’d like to thank everyone for their incredible
support over the last few years, and particularly for people taking
the time to share their thoughts.
"We have the best fans in
the world - and I am privileged and proud to be a part of your
community."
Earlier: Updates from Companies House involving subsidiary companies related
to Newcastle United caused a stir on Wednesday, specifically
the resignation of Staveley from a number of directorships.
These were explained as administrative rather than
strategic, with her position as a director of Newcastle United
Football Company Limited unchanged - that company established back
in 1890.
Club CEO Darren Eales is now also a director of that company, which
is in keeping with previous holders of that post including David
Stonehouse etc.
PS: Staveley is set to be back in the news this week, as the
deadline for repayment of a £3m debt fell on Monday. Should bankruptcy
proceedings then follow, that could affect her NUFC
future.

We understand Newcastle have abandoned attempts to arrange a
pre-season tour of the USA, after no suitable financial package
could be agreed upon.
Negotiations over alternative destinations are now in progress, with
claims of various long haul and European venues appearing in recent
days.
United played three matches in the USA in 2023 as part of the "Premier

There's no equivalent PL event this year, but Arsenal, Chelsea,
Liverpool and both Manchester clubs have all arranged their own
stateside kickabouts.
PS: The format of the 2023 SELA Cup event is expected to be repeated
this year, with the Magpies and three as-yet unidentified sides each
playing two games at Gallowgate over the weekend of August
10th/11th.
2024/25:
FAC update
Changes to the FA Cup competition from next season for a minimum of
six seasons were announced by the FA on Thursday as follows:
Scrapping of all replays from FAC1 onwards - for NUFC that puts an
end to FAC3R and FAC4R; FAC5R had previously been scrapped.
No midweek FAC round scheduling, ending the recent trend of playing
the Fifth Round in midweek.
FAC4 played over six days from Friday to Wednesday.
No PL games scheduled on FAC4, FAC5 and FAC QF weekends but FACF to
be played on the Saturday of the penultimate weekend of the PL
season*. No PL games to be played on that Saturday or the Friday
night.
* by our calculations that's May 17th 2025.
PS: The PL have also announced that the mid-season break that has
existed in different formats over recent seasons won't be continued.

On This Day in History |
24th April |
Born Or Died:
1929 David Boyle born,
Tynemouth.
(1947-49)
Inside
forward who failed to make a senior appearance at SJP, moving on to Berwick
Rangers, Barnsley, Crewe and Chesterfield.
A spell at Bradford City between 1956 and 1960 saw him play alongside future Magpie Trevor Hockey, before
joining Scarborough.
Ending his career at Bacup Borough, David worked at Allied Bakeries in
Bradford.
In later life, he became a highly-rated crown green bowls player until illness
forced him to retire. He passed away in November 2009.
1962
Stuart Pearce born, Hammersmith, London.
(1997-99)
England international penalty misser & taker, fully-qualified spark, punk
fan, Pizza Hut advert star and belatedly, a Magpie.
Beginning in non-league with Wealdstone, Pearce first faced United when
playing at Coventry City, before a 12 year association with Nottingham Forest
raised his profile.
Having provided the opposition for his City Ground testimonial in May 1996,
Newcastle signed the defender the following year and Psycho proved to be
probably the most effective (& popular) of Kenny's Dad's Army.
24 hours after moving to SJP on a free transfer from Forest, 35 year-old Pearce
debuted
in the number 3 shirt in a 3-2 pre-season win at Birmingham City.
His only competitive strike was a free-kick
against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League, although he did
belt one home in a pre-season home game against Juventus.
A Cup Final appearance against Arsenal followed but his time on Tyneside drew
to a close after Gullit's appointment as Manager.
Pearce continued playing in the top flight with West Ham, but suffered two
broken legs within six months, which sidelined him for most of the 1999/00
season.
However, that same season saw him reverse his international retirement at the
request of Kevin Keegan - then England boss -, two further caps boosting his
total to 78 (although none came while at SJP).
Pearce followed KK to Manchester City in 2001, playing one final season as
captain and helping them achieve promotion to the top flight.
Concentrating on coaching, Pearce assisted Keegan and succeeded him as full-time
City boss in
March 2005, initially as caretaker.
However, a run of poor form coupled with the sale of the club saw him replaced
in 2007 by Sven, allowing Pearce to switch his part-time England U21 coaching
position to a full-time role.
Taking over from Fabio Capello as England first
team boss on a temporary basis in the
build-up to Euro 2012, combining this with
his U21 role and management of Team GB
ahead, of the 2012 Olympics.
However, after a poor showing at the UEFA
U21 Championships in Israel when England
lost all of their group matches, his contract
wasn't renewed.
It was announced in April 2014 that Pearce would
take over as new boss of Nottingham Forest
on July 1st, after having previously
declined the position.
After a bright start at the City Ground however things rapidly went downhill
and he was removed from his position in February 2015, turning down the chance
to become Forest's Director of Football.
He then pursued a media punditry career on both TV and radio before making a
low-level, part-time return to coaching at Portsmouth during the latter part
of 2017.
And by November of that year he'd been confirmed as assistant to the incoming
West Ham United boss, David Moyes.
Exiting from the Hammers with Moyes the
following summer, Pearce wasn't reappointed
when the manager returned to East London in
December 2019.
However he did return to claret and blue the
following August, departing in 2022.
While at SJP he had a narrow escape from a road accident in August 1998, when a
seven tonne council
dustcart rolled over on top of his car near Nottingham.
Thankfully he scrambled from the wreckage of his
flattened Rover totally unscathed.
PS: Pearce has admitted that one of his
proudest moments came in the summer of 1996
- when he introduced the Sex Pistols live on
stage at London's Finsbury Park.
1967
Lionel Perez born, Bagnoles-sur-Ceze, France.
(1998-2000)
Goalkeeper who never dirtied a Newcastle shirt
in anger, although he was an unused Premier League substitute numerous times after his baffling free transfer from the mackems in 1998
- another stunning Dalglish acquisition.
Highlights (not in
his hair) included a penalty saves in a
pre-season tournament on smogside and
his transfer away from Tyneside, after a
loan spell at Scunthorpe.
However, Lionel's finest moment remains the Wembley playoff final appearance
against Charlton - for the mackems - when he conceded 11 goals (including
penalties).
After being released by United after 21 wasted months, Perez joined Cambridge United - where he'd been on loan.
We can confirm however that he failed to hand in his Newcastle subs coat and
could often be seen doing a spot of gardening clad in it (our spies are
everywhere...).
Lionel
became something of a cult figure (yes, cult) at the Abbey
Stadium, later playing for Enfield and then Chelmsford before
signing for Stevenage Borough.
Following a broken leg he retired and joined the
coaching staff at Broadhall Way, which saw him back in the
news in 2006.
During a stormy game against Northampton Town, TV cameras
caught Perez poking Cobblers coach Dave Watson in both
eyes - for which he was banned from the touchline, fined
and handed a 100 hour community service order by
Magistrates.
He exited Broadhall Way soon after that and returned to
his native France, where he coached at FC Chusclan Laudun
l'Ardoise.
1999 Lewis McNall born, Newcastle.
(2015-18)
Striker who attended Emmanuel College in Gateshead (for whom he
played rugby), accepting a scholarship with United in 2015.
Handed an U18 debut from the bench against Arsenal during
April 2015, Lewis grabbed a 16 minute hat trick against Manchester United
at Little Benton the following September (a certain Marcus Rashford netted
for the visitors).
Scoring for the U21s in a friendly against Ashington that November, a competitive bow at that level
came days later against
West Bromwich Albion at Whitley Park.
And the first of two reserve league goals in his maiden season came early in
the new year there, against Derby County.
The 2016/17 season was a frustrating one for Lewis, injury restricting his
reserve pitch time - although his liking for the FA Youth Cup remained, bagging six goals across four
ties after hitting two in 2015/16.
Marking his return with a brace against Burnley U23s in September
2017, a
14 minute treble in the Senior Cup against Blyth AFC early the following year
was followed by a loan move to Gateshead.
Netting for the Tynesiders after just three minutes of his National League
debut, Lewis had scored twice in 11 outings when a knee injury brought his
season to a premature end during April 2018.
Released by Newcastle that Summer, he underwent his rehab
at the club the following season.
Having recovered, McNall had a trial at Stoke City but
suffered another ACL knee injury that
sidelined him again.
After an absence of 917 days Lewis made a
competitive return during October 2020 for Whickham, signing
for Blyth Spartans the following May.
He left Croft Park in 2023. | |

saw a memorable season conclude.
Newcastle duly became Second Division champions but that
was only confirmed by Northampton Town drawing 1-1 at home
to Portsmouth later the same day and finishing one point
behind the Magpies.
In reality the silverware was always heading to Tyneside,
with the Cobblers needing to not only beat Pompey but also
overturn an inferior goal difference of 20.
That did mean that no public presentation of the trophy
took place and it belatedly came to Tyneside on May 29th,
when chairman Lord Westwood, manager Joe Harvey and
captain Stan Anderson received it at the Football League
annual meeting in London, returning to the north east by
train.

A breathtaking strike from
Wayne Rooney saved a mediocre Manchester United
from their first home defeat of the season as a patched-up Toon side threatened a major shock.
Darren Ambrose had given us a
deserved lead at half-time with a well-taken goal after 27
minutes, seizing on a poor clearance from 'keeper Tim Howard.
Rooney was about to substituted
with almost an hour gone following a dead leg in the first half,
but when Peter Ramage headed infield, Rooney hit a stunning
volley that flew past Given into the top corner.
Even then we looked like
holding out for a point, which was the least a spirited display deserved, but Wes Brown beat a static Shola Ameobi to
head the winner from a corner.
