Chapeau in French means "hat"; what is the story behind that name, a hat?
A:
Chapeau! (With the exclamation point) is an expression that means "bravo".

Highlights:
$50 for a 3oz(??) world, tiniest, filet mignon served with overcooked brown frozen spinach
It's been a while since we came back here. I think our meal started out very good with a small French baggage and a tiny leak soup as a complementary service. The trio of salmon was flavored well and I enjoyed it. Although im not sure if it was worth $20. (The Yelp price needs an update since the price went up)
I wish I ended my meal here. But it went downhill very quickly from this point on.
My main course was filet mignon. they now charge $50 for this embarrassingly tiny portion.
It was probably about 3 ounce. I was literally shocked. It was also served with overcooked frozen spinach as a side. The meal was cooked to perfection but it lacked flavor.
My hub and I agreed that we are not coming back here considering the service wasn't even on par with the price they are charging. Disappointing.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 1 - Feb 2, 2024Updated review
This was a sad downgrade.
I really, really, really was a fan of this place before, but can no longer recommend them as being 4 or 5 stars because I've been here multiple times before I write this review and each time was disappointing.
Let's talk about the escargot. The buttery garlic was now sour with less pesto, and the bread was cold and lifeless. I used to enjoy dipping the bread, but not anymore. 2/5 stars
Their French onion soup was also one of my favorite soups of all time.....now the broth is so salty, and the cheese barely melted on the top. This wasn't made with the same care as before.
2/5 stars for their salty onion soup which used to be my favorite.
The salmon appetizer was just not as fresh as we would have liked, and neither was the soggy salad. The salmon was a bit fishy, which is never good, and the lettuce for the salad was on the old/stale side. 2/5 stars.
My coworker's risotto was so dry, and also, the temperature was off. You know it's bad when she asked me why I thought this place was so great. 3/5 stars.
Point taken, it's not the way it used to be....and that's something that's hard to write here. This was a 2.5 star meal experience rounded up only because of the okay service.Helpful 7Thanks 1Love this 7Oh no 3Feb 23, 2016Previous reviewCame here with a former co-worker. This is our go-to place for French food.
This place is great to catch up with old friends whom you haven't seen in a year or two...or for anniversaries, dates, or birthdays.
I've seen it all here.
And since Chapeau means "hat" in French....do they have hats you ask? Yes, your bill will come in a unique hat at the end.
But enough about hats...how is the food?
I love their escargot. Forget France. Come here for the escargot instead. Their pesto sauce thing and the bread with the escargot is divine.
Their bone marrow is okay, not the greatest, but okay.
Their french onion soup is my favorite ever. I usually order two bowls.
Their entrees are done well, and I've had everything from the steak to the fish. All is done well.
Super friendly service, and the owner usually comes around to shake your hand so you feel like you're in his house.
And at the end comes the hat with your bill on it. I don't understand why everyone always wants to put it on their head though and wear it. Hasn't anyone ever heard of lice? I see people pass it around and wear it, and it always makes me cringe.
$10 says they never wash the hat. But I'm not itching to find out either.... - Jan 27, 2024
Definitely a charming date-night restaurant on Clement Street. We had a reservation around 5:30, and it didn't get busy until later in the night. I can see the attempt at fine dining vibes, but it was overshadowed by excessive loudness. The staff were very attentive, constantly refilling our hot water. I opted for the three-course option, rather than à la carte. I started with moules frites, which came with mussels in a broth alongside fries. The mussels were cooked perfectly, though the broth lacked salt, and the fries were overly seasoned, resembling McDonald's fries. This dish would have been perfect with a balance in salt and flavor; I wasn't sure if the broth was bland or the fries were too salty, vice versa.
For my second course, I picked the filet mignon. While perfectly cooked medium rare, the dish's different components overpowered the meat. There was a veal jus that added depth, yet the overall seasoning fell short. The crispy duck fat potato tasted like a hash brown with a risotto-like texture; it could've been better complemented by a simple mashed potato or potato gratin. It came with a few sautéed mushrooms, which were acceptable, but the spinach tasted like an attempted cream of spinach and missed the mark.
In the dessert course, the chocolate fondant was a chocolate lava cake with a warm molten center. However, the rum-raisin ice cream they served it with had an alcohol flavor that was too strong, masking the taste of the chocolate. If you like rum, then that dish is perfect for you. While this restaurant has plenty of positive reviews, unfortunately I was underwhelmed by every dish and didn't get that wow factor.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Feb 18, 2024
Just wow. It felt like being back in Paris. Starting with the owner who runs the place and shares his recipe with his son. Very welcoming. The food was faultless. We had the special Côte de Boeuf (bone-in ribeye) and the meat was cooked to perfection, with the bone marrow side. The onion soup was cheese, to die for. Then we had the potato side creamy and cheesy. I tried some of the salads too and they were brilliant (duck confit and beets and goat cheese). The dessert we tried them all - favourite being the French toast - but crème brûlée was also special. The champagne and reds suggested were al
Incredible and service was epic. Happy to have a place like this in SF.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Vanessa T.Long Beach, CA63511May 27, 20241 check-in

Made a last minute reservation to celebrate an anniversary and was able to get a table at 7pm on a Sunday. The staff are incredibly kind and friendly, and the atmosphere was perfect for a celebration. We each got the prefix menu along with a glass of wine, oysters, and after dinner drinks.
Bourgogne, 2022 domaine de mauperthuis- 4/5 we didn't think we could finish a bottle, so we opted for one of the options to buy per glass. Tasted like alcoholic grape juice (not in a bad way). A great compliment to the meal
Oysters on the half shell- 5/5 our waiter described the current oysters as briney and creamy, and that was exactly how they tasted! The sauce was perfect for the oysters
Escargot- 3/5 cheesy buttery goodness. Very much on the salty side
Salmon trio- 5/5 fresh fresh salmon and a whole lot of flavors that combine wonderfully together. Definitely one of my favorites from the meal.
Potato crusted black cod- 5/5 super soft fish that melts in your mouth. I have no clue what it is but the sauce is incredible
Filet mignon- 4.5/5 the duck fat potato in this entree is legit one of the best potatoes I've ever had. Also "really good. Like one of the better ones I've had for sure" - my partner
French toast- 4/5 also a melt-in-your-mouth delight. Despite how sweet it is the flavor makes you devour the whole thing. Would recommend with decaf coffee.
Chocolate fondant- 4/5 again a bit too sweet but imagine a thin crispy chocolate shell and you break it open and gooey chocolatey goodness starts pouring out. So happy it came with ice cream too.
We appreciate they brought out a platter with "happy anniversary" and a candle as well! Such a special way to celebrate. Thanks again!Helpful 1Thanks 2Love this 2Oh no 2 - Firoozeh E.Oakland, CA243615May 23, 2024
It has been a while since we visited but I must make the review for those who like to have a great French food. This is the spot, the parking is the only issue other than that, Chapeau is one of the best French restaurants we have visited. Viva France.

My partner surprised me with dinner here for my birthday and it was wonderful. Upon entering, you feel like you're transported to an intimate restaurant setting that makes the experience feel comfortable and familiar.
The service is wonderful! The staff were very warm and seemed to be passionate about working there as well. The chef came out and greeted all of the parties at dinner, which was a sweet touch.
For drinks, I had the raspberry lemon drop, which was a refreshing, sweet start to my meal! We ordered the prix fixe option, and we'll definitely do it again! For appetizers, we ordered the escargot and salmon trio, which were so good! The herbaceous compound butter with the escargot is just a match made in Heaven. For our entrees, we ordered the cassoulet and the pork tenderloin. I found the duck confit in the cassoulet to be so tender and succulent that I couldn't help but finish almost the entire plate. My partner basically cleaned his plate of the pork too. We also ordered dauphinoise potatoes and we loved how rich they were!
For dessert, we ordered the French toast and the crème brûlée, both of which were phenomenal. I particularly enjoyed the hazelnut crème anglaise and the smoky, rich salted caramel ice cream that came with the toast. I will be ordering that when I return!
Chapeau is a quaint spot that offers authentic French classics. It is a wonderful place for a date night or even a birthday dinner. I can't wait to go back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 1 - Jun 12, 2023
SO SOOO SOOOOO GOOD!! At its 26th year, there are great reasons why Chapeau! is still going strong in SF.
Great Food, Great Service, and a nice comfortable restaurant with warm ambience... keeps me coming back to Chapeau over the many years.
Chapeau! never relaxed with the quality of their food; like the chef said --- it's made with love. You can really see the intricate detail in the plating as well as the perfectly balanced flavors for each and every dish.
Service is always excellent here! The good old charm of having the chef and the owners come to greet you every single visit... and no, as much as I'd like to think I'm a VIP - no, they greet every - single - table ach and every time!! Very special and definitely adds to our dining experience.
We had a larger party of 6 here and everyone had an excellent 3-course dinner. In particular, I want to really highlight the Filet Mignon. It's definitely BOMB! and just perfectly cooked. The Rock Cod was buttery and flavorful ... and finally - their desserts are all tear here... paired w a cup of cappuccino wraps up another great meal and great evening at Chapeau! Thank you Chapeau!!Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0
