Presentation Overview:
A section of the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) project in Montréal goes through the 5 km long existing Mount Royal Tunnel which was completed in 1917. The southernmost 540 m was constructed through mixed-faced conditions (soil overlying limestone bedrock) using a clever double arch consisting of plain concrete precast segments. Hatch with the Joint Venture CIMA + HATCH (CCH) was retained by REM to complete a design to extend the service life of the existing tunnel for another 100 years and oversee implementation by the NouvLR consortium. Over the prior 100 years of service, infiltration of chloride laden groundwater has caused important deteriorations in the tunnel structural elements. Gary will present development and implementation of an innovative rehabilitation approach for 290 m of the tunnel and an innovative Sequential Demolition Method for replacement of 92 m of the tunnel. This project was recently recognized with the 2023 ITA Project of the Year incl. Renovation (up to €50M).
