How to Write Travel Articles

… in one weekend.

By Diana Cambridge

Canal Street Publishing £9.99

ISBN 978-0-9553391-1-0

The first thing that struck me about this book was the title. It sets out exactly what the author is trying to teach you. Not ‘How to Become a Travel Writer’ … because even if she succeeds in her goal; even if you successfully place your article you aren’t quite a travel writer… yet. Like, that first shaky solo circuit and bounce down the runway doesn’t make you a pilot straight away.

But, what this comprehensive book aims to do is give the reader the confidence to write that piece and submit it. It tells how to craft it and submit it in a way that editors will like and, most importantly, establish the all-important rapport that could result in further work being accepted, or even commissioned or assigned.

Step by step, the reader is put in the right mindset, then guided through producing that all-important first work. Easily-attainable goals are set, and a few ‘thou shalt nots’ given in a friendly, anecdotal style. At the end are ten ‘Golden Rules’ followed by a directory, giving details of useful books on the craft, organisations and websites, courses and even markets the aspiring travel writer might try.

If you’ve always wanted to write, but don’t know how to go about it, I thoroughly recommend this book. It’s more than a ‘how to do it’ book … it’s like a friend came into your living room, and chatted informally to you about writing.

  2. Sounds good. Too many books promise the world, this seems very realistic.

  3. It was almost spooky, the way in which Diana gives almost identical advice to what I’d give if I was asked !

  4. I’ll try to find this book here. Sounds good.
I really dislike the books/web sites/courses that promise impossible things, especially all the free trips you’ll get to take when you become a travel writer!
