West of Florence and La Spezia, the scenic Cinque Terre region is best known for five coastal villages linked only by walking path, subterranean train and ferry boat. Most visitors to the region come to hike the infamous Sentiero Azzurro, or Blue Trail, the gently meanders along the Ligurian coastline from village to village.
Northeast of St George and Springdale in the Zion National Park, the Virgin River Narrows Trail is considered the best hiking in Utah and one of the top ten hikes in the USA. Overall, the Narrows Trail is a 16 mile hike, though 90% of hikers explore only the first 3-4 miles as an out-and-back from the lower end.
Northwest of Flagstaff and far west of Grand Canyon Village, the 10 mile hike down to the spectacular Havasu Falls is a popular red rock journey. The turquoise Havasu Falls is the heart of this adventure, but it's only one of several waterfalls along the way.
Southwest of Aspen and north of Crested Butte, the 29 mile Maroon Bells Four Pass Loop is a challenging hiking trek mainly above 11,000 feet crossing four alpine passes above 12,000. It covers roughly 30 miles with 8,500 feet of climbing in meadows, alpine tundra and aspen forests.
On the steep mountain sides above Positano, there are numerous hiking routes up to the ridgeline and along the ridge tops. Most of the routes climb at a rate of 1,000 feet per mile, which is tough going up as well as going down.
Northeast of Rome and southeast of Florence, the St Francis Way is a historic walking route leading from the north and from the south to the village of Assisi. Also known as La Via Francigena di San Francesco, this pilgrimage route of St Francis is marked with vertical road signs and painted blazes that are both blue and yellow.
Northwest of San Jose and north of Alajuela, the heavily visited Parque Nacional Volcan Poás is spread over 5,600 hectacres and contains two active volcanoes. There is a hiking route that leads up past the volcano at 8,000 feet.
Passing through the most scenic mountains in the Continental US, the John Muir Trail follows a rugged 211 mile route with stunning high alpine peaks and countless lakes. Ringed by 13,000 foot peaks and granite towers, the JMT has an elevation gain of over 50,000 feet along its length.
In American Samoa, the National Park Of American Samoa (Paka O Amerika Samoa) offers hiking trails through mountainous tropical rainforests spread across 9,500 acres. The trails range from easy to strenuous.
West of Laramie and Centennial in the Medicine Bow National Forest, the Snowy Mountains Range has an excellent network of hiking trails that pass numerous alpine lakes. The trails are typically at higher elevations ranging from 7,000 to 11,000 feet.
The Sentiero degli Dei is a popular 7.8km walking path that winds down from Bomerano di Agerola westward to Nocelle (above Positano). Also known as the Path of the Gods, this is the route the Greek gods used to recover Ulysses from the Sirens out on the Li Galli islands according to Greek mythology.
Northwest of Paro, the Tigers Nest is an exception 4 mile round trip hike climbs over 600m to elevations of 3,100m. The Paro Taktsang Monastery, better known as Tigers Nest, was built in 1692 around the Taktang Senge Samdup cave, where the Indian guru Padmasambahva brought Buddhism to the country of Bhutan in the 8th Century.
