Who are you and what do you do?

What hardware are you using?

Je fais tout dans mon ordinateur (macbook). J'utilise un vieux Korg M1 comme clavier maitre, et des divatech comme moniteurs mais je voudrais bien me racheter quelque chose de plus fiable. J'ai aussi une grosse collection de disques pour les samples ce qui est probablement mon outil numéro 1. En général je fais le mix final dans les studios de mes amis Alex Finkin ou Rufuss.

I do everything on my MacBook. I use an old Korg M1 as a master keyboard and Divatech monitors, but I'd like to buy something more reliable. I also have a huge collection of records, which is probably my number 1 tool for samples. I usually do the final mastering in the studios of my friends Alex Finkin or Rufuss.

What software are you using?

Je fais tout dans Logic Pro. J'utilise beaucoup de plug-ins comme Battery par ex, pour faire mes beats. Je sais qu'aujourd'hui on trouve mieux mais quand je trouve un truc qui marche, je le garde jusqu'au bout. Je n'ai pas de plaisir particulier avec le coté informatique. Je ne suis pas aventurier, c'est plutot une corvée. Je préfère faire des beats, sampler, arranger ou éditer…

I do everything in Logic Pro. I use a lot of plug-ins, like Battery, to make my beats. I know there are better tools out there today, but when I find something that works, I stick with it. I don't particularly enjoy the technical side of making music and I'm not adventurous. It's more of a chore. I prefer making beats, sampling, arranging or editing.

What would be your dream setup?

Je ne suis pas un specialiste, mais à mon avis trop de gens focalisent sur l'équipement. Mettre de l'energie ou de l'émotion dans sa musique n'a rien à voir avec cela pour moi. Je connais des gens avec des studio incroyables qui ne sortent jamais rien. J'ai d'ailleur des fois l'impression que la course à l'équipement est un moyen de ne pas se poser les vrais questions. Ce ne sont pas les machines qui font un bon disque, c'est ce que tu fais tirer de ce que tu as sous la main et surtout le fait d'avoir un truc à dire. Bien sur des gens comme Dennis, Kerri ou Louie ont un son redoutable grace à toutes ses machines, mais à mon niveau je préfère me concentrer sur ce que raconte ma musique et je pars du principe que je devrais arriver à le faire avec le minimum.  C'est de la House Music!!!!

I'm not an expert, but I think too many people focus on the gear. To me, this has nothing to do with injecting energy and emotion in your music. I know some people with incredible studios who never release anything. In fact, I get the impression that this race to get the best gear is a way to avoid the real questions. Machines don't make a good record; it's how you make the most with what you have and, more importantly, having something to say. Of course, people like Dennis [Ferrer], Kerri [Chandler] or Louie [Vega] have an amazing sound thanks to all those machines, but given the basic gear I have, I prefer to concentrate on conveying the message in my music and that I should be able to accomplish that with the bare minimum. It's House Music!!!!

Any production tips & tricks or advice you'd like to share?

Essayer de ne jamais perdre l'énergie ou le propos du morceau reste ma règle numéro 1. Je l'imagine toujours joué à la soirée. Il faut toujours finir le morceau quitte à ne pas le garder et à tout recommencer à zero. C'est en allant au bout que l'on comprend. Autre chose très importante pour moi, ne jamais y passer trop de temps, on perd vite la spontaneitée et l'energie necéssaire à notre musique. Mes meilleurs morceaux étaient finis en 2 jours maximum, voir en quelques heures pour certains…

My number one rule is to never lose the momentum or the meaning of the track. I always imagine it being played in a club. Always finish the track, even if it means dumping it and starting over from scratch. Once you go all the way, you'll understand. Another very important thing for me is to never spend too much time on a track; you quickly lose the spontaneity and energy that are necessary for our music. My best tracks were completed in at most 2 days, and some in only a few hours.
