The most essential ingredient needed to survive in a sere environment, where mild pleas are dismissed, protests if not validated by money/ muscle power , ignored, torture rubbished, is nerves of steel.
Pooja Chauhan a hapless wife, daughter-in-law and mother was driven to strip down in a gesture which bespoke of aberrant helplessness, after repeated complaints to the Police accusing her husband and in laws of torture fell on deaf ears. Her fault: She gave birth to a baby daughter 8 months ago when her in laws desired a son. Also she refused to bring in more dowry as was being constantly demanded.
A while ago she had tried to immolate herself in front of the Police headquarters but was reprimanded. Her frustration and sense of outrage at the apathy of the Police officials on one hand and the violation of her sense of self on the other at the hands of her in laws, led her to take this heterodox step.
Breaking age old shackles of modesty she might have been ingrained with, discarding false notions of propriety she stripped herself to draw attention to her plight. Her angst though unspoken stridently conveyed her misery loud and clear!!
Its easy to deprecate her actions, to take umbrage over her decision. But those who do, imo lack a sense of compassion for human suffering. If nescience be the excuse, its even more shameful.Her state of mind shattered, on the edges of insanity, a woman pushed to the enth degree, as if proclaiming ‘ What more do you want me to do?’ . I for one laud her for her gutsy stance, showing her thumb to the world and expressing her anguish and frustration in the most potent manner she possibly had at her disposal.
The point is that in stripping herself she has in fact stripped the system and exposed its pathetic inadequacies. Clap! Clap!
With a show of extreme alacrity the Ministers have now responded, rebuked the officers for their inaction and promised to give her a patient hearing. Are we supposed to at this point rise and bow to them in deference for being sensitive and cognisant of women centric problems? Not me..
Justice is Blind!! Oh yeah.. deaf as well. Not just in the courts but in Governmental departments across the board. So what do they expect now? That the women of the country resort to undressing to awaken them from their indolent slumber?
Read the last sentence of the link guys.. The police plans to book her for ‘indecent exposure’. Oh Yeah ..’Indecent’..Is it? The system holds the key to ‘decent behaviour’ as also its interpretation apparently in wide disparity of its socially acceptable if not morally applicable perspective. No wonder their judgement or connotation of ‘behaviour’ failed to elicit any response from them with regards to her in laws, if not their own!!

I shudder to think that Pooja was pushed to such an extent that she was considering stripping completely! (in the eyes of narrow-minded good-for-nothings, that would have amounted to her “shunning all modesty”!)

1) Why she did not go to court and file a case? Even if police are inactive one can appraoch the courts …..
Ans : She wants to harass her in-laws as she wants them to be arrested without providing any evidence.
2) Why she did not file a case under PWDVA (protection of women under domestic violence act)? there are 100s of case ALL OVER INDIA

I heard from a media friend that this case is suspect…but who do you believe? It has spread like wildfire all over the world with even BBC beaming it.
Update: Culprits have been arrested..Pooja has been thrown out by her landlord as well. Now I have been told that the opposing channels are trying to hush up the matter. One cannot Superwoman style descend on every destitute woman. We have to rely on news which is corroborated with interviews of the victim and video coverage..It better be substantive!!

Hence I do would blame you if you do not understand what I mean when I say that your mismatched lingerie assaulted my senses and pissed me off.
Let me tell you that I would cancel a date for just for coffee, if I even suspect my lady friend was going to attend in underwear purchased from a bin from a department store (leave alone mismatched ones). Prudence dictates that you should be covering up your body given the amount of body fat you posses. Hence I wonder how sane you are for trying to solicit my sympathy to your cause by assaulting me. In my book the only way you could have made it worse was my having “ozone holes” in your underwear or if you had one of those Gurdinder X-Large Chaddi’s granny underwear.

The news media are private organisations that have the ulterior motive of making profits and hence sell/say anything that the masses want to read/hear. Sadly, the indian masses (including most of you posting here) would rather discuss some educated, middle-income group, urban housewife who claims to be helpless. Firstly this lady should be able to stand up for herself and her rights. She is educated- isn’t she? -Call me a sensationalist/libertarian/ stupid/egotistical etc. – but at least I am honest and try to objectively identify both my and my cultures’/society’s shortcomings- and also I try to reserve judgement on issues for which there is insufficent/unreliable data.

I apologize for disgusting you with the post. Nonetheless you reaction is evidence to my point.
Look at this in a different way. For three generations Palestinians have been denied justice. All avenues to justice have been mercilessly blocked. Their land, water, dignity and life has been stolen. The oppression that an average Palestinian suffers on a daily basis is beyond the comprehension of decent humans. My sympathy is with them. BUT as soon as they respond by killing they loose the sympathy. Nothing justifies killing. Regardless of who (governments, armies, cops, terrorist) does the killing it should be condemned as evil. This things cannot be acceptable. We cannot give the Palestinian a free pass regardless of our sympathy for their fight for their freedom.
Likewise, the situation with Ms. Chauvan. I appreciate and accept the situation of women in such conditions. My sympathy is with them, yet I cannot endorse such actions.

As bad as the plight of a lot of women is, the Palestinian situation is even worse. The despondency quotient is a lot higher. Yet we cannot and should not allow attacks against non military civilians to be acceptable. Our sympathy does not allow us to give anyone a license to respond beyond limits of morality etc even when the people in question are fighting for their freedom. It appears that like most people, you too see my point when it comes to terrorism but do not subscribe to the same logic otherwise. Unfortunately such multiple standards have made a mockery of the fight against terrorism. The world need to be clear about what is uniformly acceptable and what is uniformly wrong.

I do not agree with the comparisons drawn at all. These are two different set of circumstances on opposite end of the spectrum.
In any case definition of ‘morality’ has been the seed of contention since times immemorial, with each proclaiming his interpretation is ‘morally’ right.Imho, ‘killing’, deprivation of life, innocents murdered, absolutely tops the list.
Amelioration and causes that will propitiate the phenomenon is not within the ambit of this discussion. In fact, you have quite hijacked this thread into something else Shaan..

Thanks Kaveeta, for being so bold to touch this issue. I read the post and the comments of all. Those who believe that she should not have done this cos of her body fat need to know that it takes guts to show the fat off-if at all she was exposing it. Unfortunately, she was not. Those who believe that she had an ulterior motive of getting her in-laws arrested and humilated should know that the dowry law allows single handed advantage to the daughter-in-law. But we all know, dont we, that every law has its loopholes.
The Saviors and the Worriers for the Indian Family, the Upholders of the Anti-Obscenity Mission – where do you hide when little children, females mostly, are raped brutally and thrown to die? Inhuman practices like amniocentesis decide who liveth and who doesnt inside the womb… and you are upholding Indian Family?

An old topic! Nonetheless, this was a classic case of a depraved and sadistic woman misusing & exploiting dowry laws to the hilt.
Soon after this incident, her husband and in-laws were found to be innocent, both by police and NCW!
And yet, many months later, there are many amongst you who want to fashionably sympathize with this woman!!!!
Indian dowry laws are:
1. A travesty of justice
2. An insult to common sense
3. A joke on an individual’s natural sense of fairness.
Dowry laws are more abused, than used in this country.
Those who need it, don’t even know about it. Usually these are women from the poorer segments of society.
Well heeled & capable women, with inflated egos & insatiable greed (read alimony/maintenance), are the most prolific abusers of these laws.
Despite this reality, some people actually take time to write farcical blogs as this one. And have hordes of others mindlessly clucking in sympathy.

What has the plight of women become in a country where once women were considered “goddesses” if you will.

Take a walk in that woman’s shoes before you make such a ignorant and bigot like remark. The reason this woman has been pushed over the edge to show no modesty is because of the indecency of the Indian government as well as the disrespect towards women. Rethink your thoughts prior to making such superficial remarks.
To reply to the comment about filing a case,
Have you ever tried to file a case, as a woman, to the Indian Judicial System? It is very hard, meticulous and arduous. Many times to even have your case be filed, bribes must be given, favors must be done. If our incentive to file a case is so enticing, then walking the street half naked would be a better option, because then you will be heard! How can you even file a case in such a corrupted society, which we call our Justice Department, its a complete paradox.

Boohoo, poor her. Life is not fair, the system is not fair, not just for women, but for men too. Desperate men who break the law get severely punished, so why shouldn’t she?
Public shaming and humiliation are nothing new to men who break the law, even when they are trying to change the system to be fair.
You cannot have the world perfect for everybody. When you give something to someone, you usually take away from someone else.

The steps taken by Pooja are really bad, and gives a negative impression towards the society in large. And Systems in place.
She has not only slapped on the image of society but also slapped to the her belongings.
I am neither favoring Pooja nor favoring Society or the system who has made the injustice. But one must understand that we are humanbeing and we have certain limitation while living in the society.
The people who are favoring this incident, I request them to please dont encourage certain incidents.
