The most essential ingredient needed to survive in a sere environment, where mild pleas are dismissed, protests if not validated by money/ muscle power , ignored, torture rubbished, is nerves of steel.

Pooja Chauhan a hapless wife, daughter-in-law and mother was driven to strip down in a gesture which bespoke of aberrant helplessness, after repeated complaints to the Police accusing her husband and in laws of torture fell on deaf ears. Her fault: She gave birth to a baby daughter 8 months ago when her in laws desired a son. Also she refused to bring in more dowry as was being constantly demanded.

A while ago she had tried to immolate herself in front of the Police headquarters but was reprimanded. Her frustration and sense of outrage at the apathy of the Police officials on one hand and the violation of her sense of self on the other at the hands of her in laws, led her to take this heterodox step.

Breaking age old shackles of modesty she might have been ingrained with, discarding false notions of propriety she stripped herself to draw attention to her plight. Her angst though unspoken stridently conveyed her misery loud and clear!!

Its easy to deprecate her actions, to take umbrage over her decision. But those who do, imo lack a sense of compassion for human suffering. If nescience be the excuse, its even more shameful. Her state of mind shattered, on the edges of insanity, a woman pushed to the enth degree, as if proclaiming ‘ What more do you want me to do?’ . I for one laud her for her gutsy stance, showing her thumb to the world and expressing her anguish and frustration in the most potent manner she possibly had at her disposal.

The point is that in stripping herself she has in fact stripped the system and exposed its pathetic inadequacies. Clap! Clap!

With a show of extreme alacrity the Ministers have now responded, rebuked the officers for their inaction and promised to give her a patient hearing. Are we supposed to at this point rise and bow to them in deference for being sensitive and cognisant of women centric problems? Not me..

Justice is Blind!! Oh yeah.. deaf as well. Not just in the courts but in Governmental departments across the board. So what do they expect now? That the women of the country resort to undressing to awaken them from their indolent slumber?

Read the last sentence of the link guys.. The police plans to book her for ‘indecent exposure’. Oh Yeah ..’Indecent’..Is it? The system holds the key to ‘decent behaviour’ as also its interpretation apparently in wide disparity of its socially acceptable if not morally applicable perspective. No wonder their judgement or connotation of ‘behaviour’ failed to elicit any response from them with regards to her in laws, if not their own!!

    Kaveeta,

Moving indeed..it was very sad ,she had to take such a drastic step , shame on the Police and the system , i just hope she gets justice soon. You said it right “she has in fact stripped the system and exposed its pathetic inadequacies”.

  2. I shudder to think that Pooja was pushed to such an extent that she was considering stripping completely! (in the eyes of narrow-minded good-for-nothings, that would have amounted to her “shunning all modesty”!)

“she has in fact stripped the system and exposed its pathetic inadequacies” – Very well said.. sums up the entire episode. Hope she gets justice. More importantly, hope no other woman of the country would have to do such a thing again. Hats off to Pooja.

  3. this is a nation of impotents..that is why they take out their frustrations on women. Maybe this will make them realise that women when it comes to it can get them naked as well.. Well done Pooja!! I saw Renuka Chowdhary saying with great drama .”we will send officers immediately”..yeah only when a woman is dead or burnt alive or commits suicide or goes around insane and naked on the streets these people jump to do something.

  4. H Aneesh..Does it really happen? It would be uptopian. Even if they cannot substitute parents, In laws need not be demons. Surely there can be a middle path where the ‘bahu’ is considered an honorable member of the family.

    Hi Kiran.. Long time 🙂

Each time a shocking incident of the kind takes place we hope and presume that it will not occur again. Perhaps the wrong doers will learn a lesson and get the point..but do they? Its as if they either push their luck or pretend that what happened took place on another planet.

    Hmm. Neha.. agree!

  5. Its a disgrace! Her getting to the edge of tolerance is clearly visible. It is a shame that the officials can take citizen harassment so lightly. Her attitude has proven that the women today have got what it takes to be heard. Good indeed!!

  6. This woman pooja Chauhan has ulterior motives

    1) Why she did not go to court and file a case? Even if police are inactive one can appraoch the courts …..

Ans : She wants to harass her in-laws as she wants them to be arrested without providing any evidence.

    2) Why she did not file a case under PWDVA (protection of women under domestic violence act)? there are 100s of case ALL OVER INDIA

Ans : Because she wanted to harass her husband and in-laws. The motive may be extortion of money.

  8. 1)Agree with Shaan
    2) Lets not jump into the conclusion that the woman is at the receiving end. I watched here interview in one of the ‘news channel’. Observing her talk , i presume she is one deranged person . There were options if she really weanted to address the situation what not with all those eagre beaver mahila groups out to persecute the haples hubby and his parents.
3)Atleast give the man a chance to be heard instead of conemning him.

I heard from a media friend that this case is suspect…but who do you believe? It has spread like wildfire all over the world with even BBC beaming it.

Update: Culprits have been arrested..Pooja has been thrown out by her landlord as well. Now I have been told that the opposing channels are trying to hush up the matter. One cannot Superwoman style descend on every destitute woman. We have to rely on news which is corroborated with interviews of the victim and video coverage..It better be substantive!!

  10. Dear Ms. Chauvan

In the movie Jerry Maguire, Renée Zellweger says to Tom Cruise “ You got me on Hello”. As a man it took me a while to understand what she meant. Unfortunately gender gap does that to you. Hence I do would blame you if you do not understand what I mean when I say that your mismatched lingerie assaulted my senses and pissed me off.

Let me tell you that I would cancel a date for just for coffee, if I even suspect my lady friend was going to attend in underwear purchased from a bin from a department store (leave alone mismatched ones). Prudence dictates that you should be covering up your body given the amount of body fat you posses. Hence I wonder how sane you are for trying to solicit my sympathy to your cause by assaulting me. In my book the only way you could have made it worse was my having “ozone holes” in your underwear or if you had one of those Gurdinder X-Large Chaddi’s granny underwear.

Thank about it for a moment, look at the photos, does it make any esthetic sense? Should you not have worn something in lace or nets? Should you not have worn something matching? Preferably black ? How can I believe in you when you make such poor judgment calls?

I assure you I will consider your cause if you present them properly. At this point you got me pissed at hello.

    Yours truly,

    Shaan Khan.

In my opinion this exactly is our problem. We as Indians are self-righteous brats, who are always on a moral high-ground. I think we all need to step back, introspect and realise that morality and ethics are all relativistic. It is only then can we even contemplate defining social/systemic evils in an Indian context and try finding solutions.
Hey Kaveetaa you once blamed me for sensationalising one of your posts- didn’t you just shoot yourself in the foot by buying/sensationalising the crap the media feeds you and then writing a whole post on it.

This lady’s approach was counter productive to her cause, and might I say that has made matters worse for others in her situation. My reaction is that if she wants to be a comedian than play along and laugh at her.

  17. hey kaveetaa- i’ve got some better links (generally statistics by supra national organisations like the UN) for you.
    1)http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=child+abuse+india&meta=
    2)http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=indian+army+rapes+kashmir&meta=
    3) http://www.mediarights.org/issue/gay_lesbian_hate_crimes?keywords=&host%5B%5D=localhost:210&sort=&startat=151&groupsof=10

My response to you was less of an ego clash -but more that of frustration (especially after you said “We have to rely on news”). The news media are private organisations that have the ulterior motive of making profits and hence sell/say anything that the masses want to read/hear. Sadly, the indian masses (including most of you posting here) would rather discuss some educated, middle-income group, urban housewife who claims to be helpless. Firstly this lady should be able to stand up for herself and her rights. She is educated- isn’t she? If she cannot stand up and protect herself and her rights- then I guess we rather not even talk about her- because she has just wasted a precious gift (at least in the indian context), her education.
-And as for Vinayak’s comment “Arise .. Awake and stop such SOFT PORNOGRAPHY on the streets”.
I would like to ask him to walk a two kilometre radius in any indian city (especially Kolkata) and count the number of beggar women who are wearing a few threadbare clothes which in many cases barely hide their body-parts (many of them are also sexually abused). I then want him to say things like “Let us enjoy freedom WHILE respecting our responsibilities and our culture”.
-Call me a sensationalist/libertarian/ stupid/egotistical etc. – but at least I am honest and try to objectively identify both my and my cultures’/society’s shortcomings- and also I try to reserve judgement on issues for which there is insufficent/unreliable data.

    Comment by Murat — July 11, 2007 @ 10:43 pm | Reply

  18. oh by the way- the reason for sending you the links were that
    1) More children are sexually abused in india every hour than there are dowry deaths in a year in india.
2)more kashmiri and north-eastern women are raped by indian soldiers than there are (reported) dowry deaths.
    3) More gay-lesbian hate crimes occur every week in Maharashtra than there are dowry deaths in india.
Sadly the indian media rarely reports these statistics. Why- because most indians are uncomfortable of talking/reading about these issues however grave. Hence these stories sell lesser newspapers and reduce viewership numbers on the plethora of (mainly empty) news channels.

  19. Murat,

The point is I have totally missed your point. I just dont get it. What is it you are getting so ballistic about? The fact that I have chosen to highlight the plight of a woman whose neurotic state was a mirror of her forlorn condition or the fact that I have not written about ( according to you) the cases you have cited.

You are so wrong on every count Murat its not funny any more.

you say ” (especially after you said “We have to rely on news”).

What do you rely on Murat? What have you cited? News..right? For gods sake understand this media today is like a curates egg..good in parts. There have been umpteen instances when the highlighting by the media has saved the life of a child/woman/family/. How can you state with surety this is not one of those times?? I cannot stand generalisations without any shred of evidence as to what you are talking about.

You carry on your senseless tirade with
“Sadly, the indian masses (including most of you posting here) would rather discuss some educated, middle-income group, urban housewife who claims to be helpless. Firstly this lady should be able to stand up for herself and her rights. She is educated- isn’t she? If she cannot stand up and protect herself and her rights- then I guess we rather not even talk about her- because she has just wasted a precious gift (at least in the indian context), her education.”

Educated middle income urban housewife?? Have you lost it? Just what have you read? Have you bothered to read the links in the post? She was as uneducated as they come..living in slums almost. Incomplete information is not just dangerous it is infuriating when you choose to display on a well meaning post!!

Atleast we agree on Vinayak and his class of people. they belong to the SIF..please read up about them.. I cannot waste precious time and energy dealing with them.

    you then say

“1) More children are sexually abused in india every hour than there are dowry deaths in a year in india.”

Since how long have you been reading here Murat? I was the one who initiated a wiki for the Ghaziabad ashram girls and cried for support all over the web..
    read
    https://sachiniti.wordpress.com/2006/12/01/agle-janam-mohe-bitiya-na-kijiyoa-swami-and-his-monstrosities/

About North eastern women I dont have enough information.

See Murat, I need not have opined removing it..nobody would have crucified me. I came forward with the theory of doubt and aspersions openly.. I need not have.In that case you would never have known! Instead of lauding me for the fact that I want to portray only the truth in its balanced, un prejudiced pristine form and therefore offered to take off the blog IF the case was untrue, you seem so embittered instead to take off with”and also I try to reserve judgement on issues for which there is insufficent/unreliable data.” That is extremely unfair and let me tell you extremely disappointing from a person of your caliber who I believed would be a sane. rational mind.

I have told you this in the past as well. I choose my topics with care. My research even on the Guru Dutt blog was the best i could manage in a couple of days. I write under my name and identity in full view Murat so please do not advise me on responsible writing.!

What deeply touches my core will transform into a post. A while ago. I realised I did not have sufficient knowledge on “global warming’ so requested another reader here Mr. Gajanan to write here. I would tell you the same Murat. If you feel strongly and have enough information, please send me a post i will publish it here accredited to you.

Criticsm should be healthy. I welcome it and will help me grow. But dont badger me with ad hominem attacks which spoil the atmosphere. Shaan and me mostly disagre..but the limits are set.. No personal attacks.A healthy respect can create wonders. Dont demoralise my efforts if you cannot encourage them Murat. Believe me I am doing my best, out of no personal material gain, except to contribute my drop in this ocean of immense possibilities.

I apologize for disgusting you with the post. Nonetheless you reaction is evidence to my point.

Look at this in a different way. For three generations Palestinians have been denied justice. All avenues to justice have been mercilessly blocked. Their land, water, dignity and life has been stolen. The oppression that an average Palestinian suffers on a daily basis is beyond the comprehension of decent humans. My sympathy is with them. BUT as soon as they respond by killing they loose the sympathy. Nothing justifies killing. Regardless of who (governments, armies, cops, terrorist) does the killing it should be condemned as evil. This things cannot be acceptable. We cannot give the Palestinian a free pass regardless of our sympathy for their fight for their freedom.

Likewise, the situation with Ms. Chauvan. I appreciate and accept the situation of women in such conditions. My sympathy is with them, yet I cannot endorse such actions.

    Comment by kaveetaakaul — July 12, 2007 @ 9:57 pm | Reply

  27. As bad as the plight of a lot of women is, the Palestinian situation is even worse. The despondency quotient is a lot higher. Yet we cannot and should not allow attacks against non military civilians to be acceptable. Our sympathy does not allow us to give anyone a license to respond beyond limits of morality etc even when the people in question are fighting for their freedom. It appears that like most people, you too see my point when it comes to terrorism but do not subscribe to the same logic otherwise. Unfortunately such multiple standards have made a mockery of the fight against terrorism. The world need to be clear about what is uniformly acceptable and what is uniformly wrong.

    Comment by Shaan Khan — July 12, 2007 @ 10:20 pm | Reply

  28. I do not agree with the comparisons drawn at all. These are two different set of circumstances on opposite end of the spectrum.

In any case definition of ‘morality’ has been the seed of contention since times immemorial, with each proclaiming his interpretation is ‘morally’ right.Imho, ‘killing’, deprivation of life, innocents murdered, absolutely tops the list.

Amelioration and causes that will propitiate the phenomenon is not within the ambit of this discussion. In fact, you have quite hijacked this thread into something else Shaan..

Those who believe that she should not have done this cos of her body fat need to know that it takes guts to show the fat off-if at all she was exposing it. Unfortunately, she was not. Those who believe that she had an ulterior motive of getting her in-laws arrested and humilated should know that the dowry law allows single handed advantage to the daughter-in-law. But we all know, dont we, that every law has its loopholes.
The Saviors and the Worriers for the Indian Family, the Upholders of the Anti-Obscenity Mission – where do you hide when little children, females mostly, are raped brutally and thrown to die? Inhuman practices like amniocentesis decide who liveth and who doesnt inside the womb… and you are upholding Indian Family?
I do not approve nor disapprove of the action. Who are we to pass judgements while it is some of us who are smirking at her action and some of us who are wondering why she did not wear a matching lingerie or a lace underwear?

  40. An old topic! Nonetheless, this was a classic case of a depraved and sadistic woman misusing & exploiting dowry laws to the hilt.

Soon after this incident, her husband and in-laws were found to be innocent, both by police and NCW!

And yet, many months later, there are many amongst you who want to fashionably sympathize with this woman!!!!

    Indian dowry laws are:
    1. A travesty of justice
    2. An insult to common sense
    3. A joke on an individual’s natural sense of fairness.

Dowry laws are more abused, than used in this country.

Those who need it, don’t even know about it. Usually these are women from the poorer segments of society.

Well heeled & capable women, with inflated egos & insatiable greed (read alimony/maintenance), are the most prolific abusers of these laws.

Despite this reality, some people actually take time to write farcical blogs as this one. And have hordes of others mindlessly clucking in sympathy.

    Touche!

  41. Well done kaveeta! I really applaud you for bringing this to my attention.
What has the plight of women become in a country where once women were considered “goddesses” if you will.

To reply to the comment made by Shaan Khan,
Take a walk in that woman’s shoes before you make such a ignorant and bigot like remark. The reason this woman has been pushed over the edge to show no modesty is because of the indecency of the Indian government as well as the disrespect towards women. Rethink your thoughts prior to making such superficial remarks.
To reply to the comment about filing a case,
Have you ever tried to file a case, as a woman, to the Indian Judicial System? It is very hard, meticulous and arduous. Many times to even have your case be filed, bribes must be given, favors must be done. If our incentive to file a case is so enticing, then walking the street half naked would be a better option, because then you will be heard! How can you even file a case in such a corrupted society, which we call our Justice Department, its a complete paradox.

Thank you Kaveeta again for this great report.

  43. Boohoo, poor her. Life is not fair, the system is not fair, not just for women, but for men too. Desperate men who break the law get severely punished, so why shouldn’t she?

Public shaming and humiliation are nothing new to men who break the law, even when they are trying to change the system to be fair.

You cannot have the world perfect for everybody. When you give something to someone, you usually take away from someone else.

If life is hard, then you suck it up and do your best. Men are told to “be a man”, or “act like a man”, so if men are supposed to just deal with it, then women should too. Then it would be fair!!!

  46. Do you have any pictures of her completely naked?
The article says she stripped, but all I see are
pictures of her walking around in her underwear.
Big freakin’ deal. I see people on the street
every day wearing about that much.

  48. the people who is blaming the women are one of the real bas***, cause they dont have the gut to do anything but these people are the first to blame others. when the english said THE BLOODYINDIAN they were right, because of this kind of person like POOJA`S law. And i`m telling you fortunately i dont live in India or POOJA is not my family member otherwise either the POLICE OR POOJA`S LAW, i will make them pay foe wat they have force POOJA to do that. another things the people who just looks after these thing happening are the worst than the dogs on the street, the people who give comment against POOJA are dogs who are just good in leeking the ass.
    All my best to POOJA

  50. The steps taken by Pooja are really bad, and gives a negative impression towards the society in large. And Systems in place.

She has not only slapped on the image of society but also slapped to the her belongings.

I am neither favoring Pooja nor favoring Society or the system who has made the injustice. But one must understand that we are humanbeing and we have certain limitation while living in the society.

The people who are favoring this incident, I request them to please dont encourage certain incidents.

  51. Thanks for this post! I was googling about this incident as I feel the slut walk is sheer nonsense. Pooja Chauhan walked with real pain in her heart but everyone laughed and now since its a trend, women are participating.
