120th ANNIVERSARY of FORT WORTH’S MOST FAMOUS GUNFIGHT
Fort Worth, Texas has a rich and proud cowboy heritage and what happened here 120 years ago rivals any western legend. In the 1880’s Fort Worth was a young city and had become a major rail head for moving cattle north to market. Cowherds and cowboys, drifters and gamblers, and anyone wishing to make a dollar in this wild boom town could be found on Main Street or Hell’s Half Acre in the city’s stockyards. It was a new city in the Old West and it attracted the kind of men whose reputations were growing like wildfire.
The two men involved in what has become this city's most famous gunfight, each had well deserved reputations as expert gunmen who were not to be trifled with. One man was a famous gambler who had worked dealing cards with the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. The other was a former Fort Worth lawman who walked on both sides of the law. Each man had come to Fort Worth for different reasons. They knew one another well. They were for a time, friends.
But on the cold night of February 8, 1887, Jim Courtright called Luke Short out of the White Elephant Saloon. Words were exchanged, accusations were made, guns were drawn, and Courtright was killed in one of the last great shootouts of Texas’ bloody Old West.
The Gunfighters from Lagniappe Productions will re-enact this legendary duel on February 8, 2007 in front of the White Elephant Saloon at 106 East Exchange Avenue in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. The event is free and begins at 8 pm rain or shine.
