1992 300zx Twin Turbo
Oxford Gray

About the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo:

For a few details about the amazing 300ZXTT, check out this FAQ.   Briefly, the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo is a 300HP fuel-injected, twin-turbocharged v-6 two-seater with removable tops, 5-speed, rear-wheel steering, switch-controllable shock damping, variable-rate power steering, electronic climate control, a very nice sound system, 180MPH top speed and better skid-pad numbers than the Porsche 911.  This car was on Car and Driver's Ten Best Cars list  for five years in a row.

This fine example:

This car is a metal-flake gray 1992 Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo, bought with 74k mi on the car and 14k mi on a Nissan- remanufactured engine (overheated under warranty).  Now has 90k miles (30k on the engine).

It is in very nice condition mechanically and cosmetically, and it is a pleasure to own and drive.  A real head-turner.  Adult-owned, well cared for, rigorously maintained, with a great many thoughtful performance enhancements without compromising the car's original trim and driveability.

Appearance

There are no scratches and no dings in the bodywork.  The car looks great.

Interior is great also.  No tears in the seats, good carpeting, original Z carpet inserts.  No cracks in the dash.  Original T-top bags, T-top sunshades.

CarFax shows no damage history of any kind.  Z-shop inspections return a clean bill of health.

Repairs and maintenance before I bought it

  • Nissan remanufactured and installed engine (30k mi ago).
  • New radiator, water pump, oil pump, timing belt, seals, belts, O2 sensors, injector harnesses.
  • Has had some repaint, on the nose I think, at some point, but it's an excellent job so it's hard to tell what was painted and what wasn't.  I heard this was under warranty too.

Repairs and maintenance I've done

  • New shocks and springs.
  • New control arm bushings.
  • New clutch, clutch cylinder, flywheel.
  • New rear engine seal, front and rear transmission seals and differential seal.
  • New platinum plugs (colder heat range to match tuning).
  • New injector harness.
  • All new synthetic fluids.

Custom Features I've added

  • Clifford AvantGuard 4 top-of-the-line alarm system.  Remote trunk pop, automatic windows, wired and wireless disablers, radar interior protection when t-tops off, anti-carjacking feature, fully customizable via laptop.
  • Original Bose system replaced with very nice Pioneer DEH-P7300 CD player and Infiniti speakers front and rear.  Excellent sound with future growth potential: head unit supports optional direct-drive subwoofer, amp, hands-free phone, XM Radio and more.

  • New Nissan remote-adjust shocks.  Smooth, controllable ride.
  • Eibach ProKit springs.  Slightly lower, solid, flat handling.
  • Stainless brake lines.
  • Axxis Metal Master brake pads.
  • Neo synthetic brake fluid.
  • Hella air horns.
  • Racing pedals.
  • Superweave car cover (very light, very compact, custom fit, high performance, expensive).

Fluids used

  • Red Line synthetic engine oil.
  • Red Line synthetic transmission and rear end oils.
  • Red Line water wetter and distilled water in the radiator.
  • Red Line synthetic power steering fluid.
  • Neo synthetic brake fluid.

Note: this engine shot was taken before the silicone hoses were installed.

Performance

The engine is very powerful; the car was dyno'd at 300RWHP with regular gas and conservative boost.  The synthetic fluids add noticeable power and noticeably smoother shifting.  The car shifts quickly and crisply.  The handling is very flat and very quick.  It has always been an adult-owned, weekend car, respectfully driven, never hot-rodded or abused.

Does it have any flaws?

One of the t-top's glass has a couple of small scratches in it (but it doesn't look bad at all).  There is one very small rock chip on the driver's door pillar, touched up with Oxford Grey.  There are typical sand specks and chips on the nose from normal freeway driving.  The usual scratches on the bottom of the front air dam from driveways.  One small blemish on the driver's side interior door padding, where people have pushed to open the door for ten years.  A couple of scuffs on the shift knob.   No rips, tears or marks anywhere on the leather seats, but they are just a bit stiff with age and sun.  A few minor squeaks need tracking down and tightening.  Don't get me wrong: this car looks great and drives great; it is simply a great car.  I'm just trying to save us both some time by telling you everything I can think you'd want to know, right up front.

Needs next:

The car is super-attractive, very strong and very reliable.  The things I'd do if I were keeping it are:  The tires are getting thin.  I'd get a full set of Pole Positions.  The rubber-over-chrome trim strips on the outside are weathered.  I have replaced the largest, but the smaller ones could be replaced too.  The front spoiler bottom edge could have the driveway scuffs touched up.  The seats need some good leather softener worked into them periodically.  I've treated them and they're very solid, but they need frequent treatment due to the extra sun from t-tops and could stand a good lube.  Lastly, due to the power of this car, personally I would either remove the boost jets and return to the stock 300HP, drive very carefully in the rain, or add a Racelogic traction-control system.  That's the ideal strategy.

Why am I selling?

Why is anyone selling right now?  The last thing I want to do is sell this car.  I have sweated bullets, spent months researching and detailing, and hemorrhaged money.  But the harsh fact is, I'm self-employed and the job market is way down.  So I'm circling my wagons and cutting back to the bone; I'll be driving my beater Subaru wagon and motorcycle for the foreseeable future.  Ouch!  But someone will get a great deal on an outstanding car

The price:

Kelly Blue Book says a bone-stock 1992 300ZX Twin Turbo with 90k miles is worth about $11.5k.  I paid $17k for this fine example 15k miles ago, specifically because it was a rare bone-stock car owned by an older person, with low miles on a Nissan-installed remanufactured engine.  The improvements, upgrades and mods I have done since, detailed above, total $10,800.  I have all records for this work.  It took me over a year to tune this car to its current state.  And oh yeah, it's got brand-new tabs.

So: do you really think $13.5k is too high for this car?  If so, please don't even call me!  No offense, but I don't have time to talk to people who are really looking for a beater.  Trust me, there are a whole lot of thrashed 300ZX Twin Turbos out there.  Go buy one of them.

If, on the other hand, you are looking specifically for a car with all the features this one has, and you want to save yourself a huge amount of time and money over searching endlessly for an adult-owned, well-treated stock car and doing the research and work yourself to create a powerful, reliable performance car, please do come take a look; I think you will not be disappointed!  This car is an amazing deal for the right buyer.
