Confused.com isn't an insurer and it isn't a broker. It's a comparison website, which searches the big-name insurers in order to get the best deal. Instead of filling out the same forms again and again you do it once and Confused.com sends the data to the insurers, coming back with a good range of quotes.
Confused.com used to send quotes by email but now it's almost immediate. Once you've entered your details you'll get quotes from firms including esure, Halifax, Tesco, Elephant, Privilege and so on, and if an insurer won't cover you the site won't waste your time by providing any details (although you can see the list of such insurers if you like).
The site is simple, friendly and easy to use, and the forms worked fine in different web browsers. Despite searching 96 sites the forms were straightforward and results came back quickly. The site also asked us whether we had a protected no claims bonus, and whether we wanted such protection on our new policy.
After about ten seconds Confused.com gave us 61 quotes, and the price differences were dramatic: the cheapest quote (for a knackered Saab
95) was £237 from Esure, while Quinn Direct wanted £1,042.67 - more than half the value of our car. We were particularly impressed by the way Confused.com shows the key details in its table, so you don't have to wade through small print to find out what the excess is, how much you'll pay extra for direct debit or whether legal cover is included.
