Technology taking over the world, and our lives?

Whatever happened to the lives we had before the computer took over the world?  OK don’t sigh and roll your eyes and close the browser before labeling me as a Tech hater, as that is certainly not the case.  I’m only wondering about the impact these computers ruling our lives are having on our social abilities as sociable creatures.

It’s easy to be a sociable and outgoing person online when you’re hiding behind a pen name, but what about the social skills you learn when having to deal with awkward situations or when meeting someone for the first time?  How do you step into a job interview and secure the job when you can’t even look the interviewer in the eyes for longer than 2 seconds?

These might seem like drastic examples but it frames what questions I ask quite adequately.  If all the interaction you have is with the computer screen in your room, don’t we run the risk of becoming hermitted and removed from society?  Is that a risk worth taking?  There’s some food for thought.
