OS X Lion and PGP

Another OS X version, another disappointment with PGP. Quick answer to your questions: PGP does not work under OS X Lion. As we speak, there is no official message on when it will. Those of us who braved the OS upgrade saw the following:

What else did you expect?

GPG Tools page says everything except the Mail plug-in works well.

So, if you get to know anything on file and message encryption in the new world of Lion, please drop a comment on this message.

I believe that there is a new version labeled 10.1.2 build 50 (Service Pack 3) (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH163224).

Did anyone try to load pgp desktop 10.1.2 with Lion ?

10.1.2 Build 50 (SP3) displays the same behavior as mentioned above, just imagine the same screen shot but with the “you have PGP 10.1.2.50” instead of 10.1.1 you get the same message with Lion 10.7.2 (you can download for iCloud via Mac Developers site…)

Tested php desktop 10.1.2 build 50, and the problem is the same. Looks like we need to wait that some lazy engineers do their job…

Utterly disgraceful that the product release will be targeted “in the next few months” – shows utter disregard for a significant group of business users and neglect of the PGP product. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH165159

Unacceptable… My secret OGP disk image, containing sensitive information, does not open anymore… I NEED those files! Please update the software!

I just installed the new version which reports as 10.1.2.9 – same error, does not launch.

hehe, got it working by pure chance.

    attempt to execute: /Applications/PGP.app/Contents/MacOS/PGP

Then, as if by magic Lion detects I need a Java runtime (wtf no JRE) and automagically. installs it.

I don’t know whats more scary. Symantec’s response or the fact that Lion automatically installed an application when it was not present.

When Symantec acquired PGP, they axed about a dozen Mac developers. Any wonder, then, that Mac support lags well behind? OS X is not a priority for Symantec.

I have to wonder why Apple doesn’t come out with iGPG and fix this mess once and for all ….

There’s PGP Desktop 10.2 MP1 which is a pain in the ass to download, but actually runs on Lion, problem is, it randomly quits, erases message services, etc, and well it’s been impossible to set up with icloud 😥

10.2 seems to be OK, though I have also had a couple of stability issues and the licence activation process was very flaky, requiring a full re-install and some strange suggestions from Symantec PGP support (yes it does still exist!)

I too was really disappointed by the general-purpose encryption offerings available on OS X. So I wrote TextShade. It provides 256-bit AES encryption of text and images, with a free online decryptor. Check it out:
