The Key to the D Day Landings

The Crest of 518 Squadron

Take a look at this previously unpublished story in our Aeronautical Features section. It is based on an account from a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner who was attached to 518 Squadron based on the Isle of Tiree, Inner Hebrides, during WWII.

I discovered this record of eight men's bravery as a result of the chance purchase of an RAF Irvin Flying Jacket. After some research, I was able to reunite that jacket with its original wartime owner - Warrant Officer John Bristow. Part of John's story is already published, if you have not seen it, you can find it here.

When I first met John he mentioned that, as well as his brush with death in the North Atlantic in November 1944, he had previously been involved with an extremely "hush hush" operation. That Op had had an impact on the timing and strategy for the allied invasion of Europe - Operation Overlord.
