I am very excited to introduce the first of many Ferrari 250 GTOs by Jean-Paul Magnette! Thanks to our fellow collector and AMR book author, Michael Gregg, I can officially announce a new project in partnership with Jean-Paul to create all of the GTOs. These builds will be one-offs, each based on an AMR kit (thank you Michael), many using the very rare, X-AMR 5001 series kits. Jean-Paul has already begun work on the first 5 GTOs. When these GTOs are finished, we will list each model on ebay and let all interested collectors have an opportunity to bid. These are the first 5 GTOs with photos of the real cars:
#3527 Tour de France 1962 Bianchi/Dubois
#3987 1000km Paris (Monthlery) 1962 Pedro & Riccardo Rodriguez
#4153 24H Le Mans 1963 Elde/Dumay
#4293 24H Le Mans 1963 Beurlys/Langlois
#4757 24H Le Mans 1963 Tavano/Abate

And now for the build process from the master himself. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I will. :-)

You see the AMR kit is provided with 3 air vents in the front wing; as our chosen GTOs have only 2 air vents, first work is to close the 3rd one.
Putty is perfect for small blemishes, I prefer to use pewter soldering for bigger holes.
See next photo.

Once the excess pewter has been carefully filed down, we'll get a smooth surface. See next photo...

The last blemishes will disappear with some putty.
You can see here the holes for rear lights, door handle and number's lighting have been drilled.
Also the lip of the wheel arch has been filed too (see the difference with next picture), as not all GTOs had this lip. The purpose was to mount wider tyres.

Next step, the putty for all small surface defaults and porous holes.

On 2 of our GTOs the air vents on the front part are totally or partly closed, so we have to use some putty to reproduce this.
On the left is #3987, and #3527 on the right.

Here is chassis #4757, the openings in the rear wings were closed to follow Le Mans regulations. I'll try to adapt parts of an older AMR kit.
You can also see that the small air vent behind the side window has been closed, as on all our first 5 GTOs .
And that's all for today !

A huge thank you to Mike and Jean-Paul for making this dream possible! I'm sure we will all enjoy the process Jean-Paul will share and learn quite a bit from Jean-Paul in the along the way. I know this thread will make us appreciate his work and our collections even more. Of course this appreciation for fine 250 GTOs could not be possible without Mr. Ruf's masterful AMR creations..which are just so inspiring and satisfying. I hope you all enjoy this as the start of the GTO's 50th anniversary!! 2012 will be a great year for GTO nuts!

Oh to have an unlimited source of money... and a very understanding wife )
Well, 1 out of 2 isnt bad.
Can't wait to watch the continued work!
I must say, I never get tired of seeing master builders works in progress.
I always learn something, and look forward to trying my own hand at it.
Thank you Mike and Jean Paul.

I take it you are a very wealthy man, Chad... :o)

However, yes, like yourself and all the others here, I also never tire of seeing these artisans showing how they achieve what they do.

I received new photos from Jean-Paul today!

Once the putty is dry enough, we can sand it to get the smoother surface possible before painting. Here chassis #3527 and 3987, you also see that the trap doors of the front part have been engraved.

The rear wing of #4757, shape of the air vent cover not too bad and the opening has been reworked with a drill.

Next step is the preparation of the inner parts, to check if they do fit properly; adjust the wheel axle supports so that ride height is correct and the wheels are well positioned in the wheel arches.
Here also we have to use some putty, especially to fill the inevitable porous holes.
