Can still sink hours into this game even today. All the other reviews have said it all.

It does benefit from a faster Amiga though so use an 040 in UAE for the most benefit. It still plays nicely on plain 68K but can bog a little in busy maps.

As close as it gets to a perfect game. I prefer it over most modern strategy games both in gameplay, graphics and sound. Play it on UAE with a CRT filter and the pixel art still looks stunning today. The gameplay loops still feels fresh although late games can become rather drawn-out because conquering the opponent's castle generally requires a -lot- of resources. The fact that this even has a simultaneous 2 player mode with 2 mice on a ecs machine is crazy! A shame they didn't include nullmodem support though.

First and best version, with the 68040 the maximum size of the random world is +1 than on PC, for the rest it is identical, with a different presentation page on amiga, which I prefer (personal choice)

Who knew that moneyless resource management could make such an engrossing, absorbing and downright addictive game? With well-laid-out menus, real character in the people you see on screen, and visual representations of every activity, the result is accessible and fairly quick to learn (though the manual isn't perfect), but with subtleties you never quite stop learning, and no two attempts at each level are the same. The two-mice two-player mode is a lovely bonus too. Makes use of extra memory for more sound and bigger level, but a 512+512 system gets plenty to enjoy. Cute yet mature in a manner no other Amiga game can match.

See review for more.

What I can only call the top 5 games you should play on an Amiga, one of the rare occasions where the Amiga version was better then the Dos counterpart too.

Graphically this game looks amazing although best played on a beefed up A1200.
Sound design is great, the music is awesome albiet repetitive and I usually turn it off after it loops once. Full SFX mode though especially in high building areas sounds amazing like as if your in a town.

Gameplay is smooth, intuitive and ground breaking for the time. This has alot of sequels and all of them are worse then this game, Settlers 2 was the closest but still broke the formula too much.

Now something I haven't seen mentioned here is this game is best installed onto a HDD but also it does have a few bugs and annoying things:
- Knight Morale and Rank are never discussed how they affect fights. It does alot especially morale.
- Have you ever wondered why a rock wasn't mined by a rock quarry fella? It's cause if the bottom right of the rock has something there it stops them getting on the rock.
- Sometimes the Kingdoms on the map just don't give up even if you 100% wipe them off the map.
- A real annoying thing is during missions cause they use set seeds they also I guess rigged it so the enemy will have set "spots" they start at. If you start earlier around those spots you begin the game with a enemy pushing your border right in.

Really really really good game. Had no idea what I was doing back in 1993 but playing it these days is easy as pie. It's quite simple but satisfyingly complicated. It could really do with a high res mode and the scrolling is a bit odd, but those are probably my only criticisms!

Probably the best game on the platform. A wonderfully deep strategy game that somehow manages to be incredibly chilled at the same time. The graphics are exquisite and detailed and the 10+ minute music loop will stick with you forever. If you can get a friend sat next to you with another mouse, the multiplayer is a singular experience. The fact that it's just as much fun to simply watch your nation go about its business as it is to play the game speaks volumes.

I remember being so engrossed with this game. It had a very idyllic feeling as you set out to build your settlement and watching the little men slowly carrying out your orders. It has combat sure but it was still a relaxing game. Spent many hours plating this and wish I could do it all over again!

This is probably the game that I have spent most time with of all the Amiga games. Absolutely great! Marvelous GFX, playability and addictiveness. And that intro! And it all came on 3 floppy disks. Wow! One of the top titles on the Amiga. One of the best games ever invented. It spawned several sequels but it all began here, in 1993. A piece of important gaming history. It was back in the time when there was innovation in the industry. Clever, creative people like Volker Wertich could come up with new ideas and make something that noone has before. Those were good times. And now, ask yourself a question: when was the last time when you played a game that seemed clearly innovative? A game that didn't feel like it is another clone of some other title? Personally, I can't recall any after 2010. It's all the same rehashed ideas over and over again.

I've been walking through all the 30 levels most part of the time I had my first A600 at the early nineties. I loved it. Settlers was a pioneer in the field of building RTS strategy games. It's full of beautiful buildings and tiny men, but all of them working on something important. It's very smart game with very well designed infractucture and economic rules. One could say that its weakness are battles, but that's not true. It's a cherry on the cake!

But again, what's the best on it? It's for two players in cooperative or battle mode (screen divided vertically). Cooperative mode is something unbelievable. It's simply great game. The next parts had never overcomes this first!

All of it (without cute intro) on ONE dd floppy

A pearl of a game.

But I didn't understand why the heck the HighRes Version wasn't included in the Amiga Version. At least MY Amiga was far more powerfull than any PC anyone of my "friends" had back then ...

And It didn't cost the world as some of you might think. PC was way more expensive to be upgraded to this level. Even in 1995. The Amiga market has somewhat cut itself by these Actions ...

The Game itself (apart from the missing HighRes Mode) is the best Version for any platform I know. Mainly because of the Sound. Everyone should have played this.

All the praise I can read in here holds for me as well. The Settlers is indeed as addictive as it is said to be, and sports a revolutionary economic system that is not currency-based.

It does have its downsides. For one thing, the slow pace could make a single match tedious at times. I bet most people would have spent half as much time glued to the screen, had they only had a fast forward option (maybe on 68030+ hardware). Then the exclusively iconic user interface is sometimes counterintuitive, and even with the manual in your hands, a simple tooltip would have been really helpful. Finally, unlike the DOS version it does not support Hi-res, even on high-end Amigas.

This is not to sound 'against-the-grain' or anything: The Settlers is still a great game without a doubt. Its flaws pale if compared to the overwhelming pros, yet they still do make themselves felt.

Lots of positive words was said about Settlers, but rarely negative aspects appear. Majority of enthusiastic opinions about Settlers comes from the first impression - great graphics and animation, climatic sfx, cutesy lemming-like characters following their own agendas. After many hours of play, when this impression wears off, game gets boring. Somewhere around 10th level doing same things all over again becomes irritating. Settlers shows what it has best too quickly - finishing first level is like finishing last one, no new elements are introduced. Contrary to, for (nearly perfect) example, Dune II which lets you feel the technological progress of your domain. Also, Settlers lacks plot. To sum up, playing Settlers is like replaying first level over and over again, but with different settings. It really destroys the game.

Played this to death until the maps got so repetitive and games took DAYS or WEEKS to finish. Very addictive once you know how to build up your local ecconomy and get troops on the go. Very satisfying to raid the other players, and even divert their supplies by placing a path next to theirs. I used to leave it running for hours just on it's own.

Used to play this alot with my sister with two mouses. Great fun. The games lasted for ages tho', since she didn't appreciate me suddenly attacking her outposts. She would immediately act in retribution - in real life terms. Ouch! Good thing there are network games nowadays...

This is one of the main reasons I re-purchased a 1200. Ok, the missions are a bit repetitive, but how can you not love the superbly detailed graphics? The people in the game become 'your people'-you do care that they get the things they need.

It's not a game you can just whack in and play, you do need to set aside a decent bit of time. I remember staying in many school holiday nights and playing this for hours. It's such an awesome game. You have alot to think about whilst playing, but it's never a chore. Just a fun game from start to finish, full stop.

I couldn't believe how much fun this game was to play. Indeed, the best game of its type on the platform. Went beyond my former favorite Power Monger by adding a very appealing economics system that was really fun to work with. The only weakness was how systematic the combat system was. Even so, nothing hurt this relaxing and fun to play game. I've tried all the versions that came later, and while mostly fun, none were as enjoyable as the original. Indeed, first rate stuff.

Wow, I the entire time missed out on this game. A few hours ago I fired up WinUAE, and I just then wasted more than a hour to build a big village.

So yeah, this game is that good, even though the long intro staggers your process to enjoy the game, but then when you're playing, I bet you wouldn't want to stop at any point now.

My favorite "Strategy" game that was released on the Amiga.
Spent hours watching my little settlers build up my buildings and working chopping trees, farming and going to war.
Still play this game 2day. I wish there made a remake of it instead of Settlers 2 (not as good as the original)
Also enjoy the PC version of it with is SVGA graphics, the screen wasnt as close as it is on the Amiga.
One of the best on the Amiga!!!!!!!!

Excellent and beautiful game whose appeal is much of the same as the much later rollercoaster tycoon; building and expanding a world while you see your little people live and thrive in your creations. Deeply satisfying.

Alas, it is not as fun to go to war as it is to build your world.

Well, in the matter of audio-visuals and concept this is really a piece of art. Your job is to maintain your empire, make it strong enough to defeat the enemy. Everything is almost perfect until you face the most important part of the game - the fight. It should not have happened. It ruins everything. Although it is still great, very unique game, flaws are unforgettable.

I remember having a demo disk back in 1994 I think it was, with Turrican on and this. For weeks me and my brother only played Turrican, on our Amiga 500+, but then one day I pressed F2 for The Settlers, and my life changed forever! I shall never forget watching a woodcutter get built for the first time, and then watch him chop down a tree! From that moment onwards, I was hooked and promptly bought the full version, in a pack called Beau Jolly I think, which came with Canon Fodder, Chaos Engine and Terminator 2. Several years later I installed it on an Amiga 1200 and then I could play the bigger map sizes! Over 15 years after that first demo, I'm still playing it and loving every second! The Settlers is well and truly, a CLASSIC!

It's a bit of a sandwich game really, meaning you can leave the room for the refrigerator, get a sandwich, watch some telly or call up a friend, and then return to the computer to see what has happened during the time you were away. The game doesn't rush you or anything. But there is something deeply satisfying about the way your small kingdom slowly expands and gets more productive.

I remember when this game was released, my whole family played it. Even my mum and my 10 year old sister. I also remember we actually had to buy one Amiga 500 extra so the whole family could play it without waiting for a computer to be free. We didn´t have any space for it though so we had to put it on a bench under the Christmas tree. That will explain how much I love this game.

All-time favourite!
[edit]
A truly masterpiece. Settlers defined strategy/city builder games. Packed on only one disc (Disk 1 and 2 were intro, cutscenes). With a level generator. Many differently behaving enemies. With state of the art interface. And very, very beautiful graphics. With hunderts of cuddly, tiny people on screen. And everything moved. People, Trees, Water, every worker was shown with own animations. With no pale or even weird color choices. Nope. Everything looked just perfectly.

This game is by far the best, the most defining strategy/city builder game on the Amiga plattform. While there are many fantastic games out there, this one - Settlers - was the pinnacle.

Technically impressive an superior to all the other strategy/city builder games it also had a steep, but never unfair learning curve. It even had a multiplayer (pl vs pl and teamplay). Which could be played on the same Amiga.

Did this game had any issues or even bugs? I don't remember any.

The only downside is the passive battle system. It depends on some stats and greatly on luck.

Dangerously, dangerously addictive. I spent entire weekends on this thing, "I have a lot of homework, I do not want to be disturbed!" Like Championship Manager '93 - I have purposefully avoided the sequels, making a stab at getting a life, going outside, talking to people, and so on. That was the Plan. The Plan fell through: curse you GTA 3!!!

Me and I friend of mine first played this game when we were very little. We loaded the game, clicked on something at the main menu (at that time we didn´t know a single word in English) and started a game. And there we were out in the middle of nowhere with nothing more than a castle and some resources. "How does this work" we asked ourselves and started to click away at anything we saw. And suddenly we had created a road and after that some small dude walked out of the castle and started to scratch his head and doing nothing. Next thing you know another small guy comes out and started to build something. And so time went on we had created a small society and not knowing how we did it, we were just so good! We were so proud! After a while of "building" stuff we started to explore the map and found something strange. It was another castle, with a different colour just sitting there doing nothing. After some investigation me and my friend came to a conclusion. That lonely castle that wasn´t doing anything was actually OUR castle! Yes it's true. We had spent over six hours watching the computer opponent. We were so ashamed that we didn´t play the game again for quite some time!
