Mike Meakin graduated the University of Toronto in 1991 with a Specialist degree in Physics. Joining the Canadian Navy after graduation, he spent 8 � years as a Combat Systems Engineering Officer before moving on to a civilian role as project lead on the US Army Tactical Unmanned Air Vehicle (TUAV) Shadow 200 control station software.

Over the course of six years, this effort was taken from the very initial stages of competing in and winning the US Army fly-off, to fielding this system into combat in Iraq, where it has now accumulated over 250,000 combat flying hours. During this period, Mike also led the development of the US Army Remote Viewing Terminal (also fielded in Iraq), integrated the Tactical Common Data Link (TCDL), extended the Shadow 200 control station software to control a Shadow 400 maritime UAV system and, finally, led the integration of the US Army Hunter UAV into the existing TUAV control station. His involvement with the US Army TUAV program along with his early involvement with the US Tactical Control Station led to his reviewing and commenting against early drafts of the STANAG 4586 UAV protocol standard. This standard is now commonly a threshold requirement for new UAV procurements throughout NATO.

Mike has also authored half a dozen papers on unmanned vehicle development that have been delivered at AUVSI in Orlando, the Bristol UVS Conference, UVS Tech in Brussels and the Australian International Aerospace Congress in Melbourne.

In early 2007, drawing on his extensive experience in the defence aerospace and unmanned vehicle field, Mike co-founded InnUVative Systems, Inc. to develop software for the unmanned vehicle market. This effort has culminated in development of the first STANAG-4586 compliant VSM for the JAUS protocol.
