Different brands garden tractor's? Older engines?? opinions

Postby BigBill » Fri Jan 04, 2008 4:29 pm

Do you collect different brands of garden tractors too?

I just found a cub cadet 1000 but the guy has all other older brands of garden tractors that look interesting too. I picked up a montgomery wards tractor with a 8hp briggs and a bolens with a wisconsin engine so far. I get them delivered tomorrow so i'm not sure of the exact models yet. They were covered with ice/snow.

How would you rate the other brands of garden tractors?

Good, just ok or excellent?

Older engines:

How would you rate the older engines? Good, just ok, excellent?

1.Wisconsin (the single cylinders)
2. Kolher "K" series
3.Briggs
4. Techcomsen
5. Lauson

What do you think of them lets hear the good, the bad and the ugly stories if you have them.

Wisconsins are good motors, I have one in my bolens 1000 and have not had a problem with them. Briggs are about as common as dirt. Good motors. A good kolher is a running kolher. They get $ to rebuild. I like kolhers, have about 5 kolhers. Techcomsen are good motors but their carbs. are weird. Have not work on to many lausons, but heard they are good. Just my 2 cent.

What kind of Bolens had you get?

I think its a 1050 with the wisconsin engine with a starter/generator and it has a hi/low range. It has a mower deck but i'm not sure what size it is. I only paid $100 for it. I did open the hood and turned the engine over by hand a little so its free. I got the montgomery wards tractor with a 8hp briggs and it also has a starter/generator and a snowblower, castiron pto driven rear tiller and a mower for the same price of $100. I figure these were worth it for the engines alone and if the tractors run thats a plus i came out ok. I'm hoping the briggs is the older castiron engine. Inbetween playing with the cub cadets i have these two to play with too.

I'm hearing the old bolens were really good tractors.

Yes the ones with the hi/lo like the one you got. They are tanks. 1050s are good little tractors. Sounds like to get a good deal.

My Dad has a QT 17 bolens to mower his lawn. If you want a lawn mower look for one. They are bigger tanks.

Bill,
The Montgomery Wards tractors are actually Simplicity tractors with different color paint and decals. Check out http://www.simpletractors.com for LOTS of info. They are little tanks, and potentially even better built than the older Cub Cadets. I have owned several old Simplicity tractors, and they are pretty amazing.

1)Kohler ( I had real good luck with all the ones I have)
2)Briggs (grew up on briggs and clinton's--also decent motors)
3)Wisconsin (spendy to fix,--parts hard to find, but good motors) thanks; sonny

I may need some help here with the montgomery wards hydrostatic-16 This looks pretty complicated more complicated than the cadet hydro's. I gave this one to my son. I'll help him out as much as i can. Its a challange to work on something new and different. This is one tough looking tractor. It sits very low too. I like the herby type headlites too. My son just fixed a snowblower on his own now he is going to tackle the tractor next... I told him its no different than the dirtbikes we fixed together. He pulled the carb to clean it and he is cleaning the points next. I told him lets hear it fire up before we take it apart to clean and paint it. For a tractor sitting outside for many years it looks good even the oil is clean. The sheetmetal needs some repair but its doable. This one came with a snowblower, cast iron tiller and a mower deck. I think its a 16hp briggs, i never seen a single cylinder briggs this big.

The Bolens is a 1053, thats a 10hp wisconsin engine w/mower deck. Here is another well built tractor. The frame looks like square tubing. It has the hi/low tranny and the front splined PTO shaft comes out inbetween the front axle right in the center of the tractor below the axle pivot. Its really neat too. This one was in a fire the rear tire is cooked(1) and the rear fender is bent but it looks like a runner with a little work.

If the wards doesn't run or its something we can't repair i'll give the kid the bolens next. But i think he will do ok.

I need to take pics soon right?

The wife just found out i got two more tractors when they arrived today thats 3 tractors in a week. I have to slow down now for a while.

My son after working 12 hours in a cabinet shop would go home and push two push mowers at the sametime to cut 1 1/2 acres of grass. I told him to get the rider mower running and we'll take the two push mowers and put two little bat wings on the wards tractor.

I'll take pics today if Gilles will post them for me?

I have heard the word mowcycle before somewhere.

These sure are different than the cub cadets.

The 1053 bolens was in a fire so the right rear tire and fender are burnt but the rest of the tractor survived. Plus its been sitting outside for many years.

The montgomery wards hydrostatic "16" is a totally different tractor its a hydro. It looks like a low rider(sits very low) but both tractors look to be built tough.

I'm glad i'm not alone but every tractor i see i want to bring it home if it catches my eye. I'd like to own something different than cub cadets/cubs too. Well in the garden tractors for now anyway.

I was the same way with garden tractors. But went you have no more room to keep them in, then it stops. I have 12 garden tractors so it was time to stop any ways and to many projects.

There's one more you really need... an Amigo. It was built about 100 miles directly west of you at Dowagiac, MI. Mine is a completely original '65. It's built like a tank... the sturdiest I've ever seen. Even the grille is cast iron. The hood, fenders, and seat pan are the only sheet metal. It's loaded with big tractor features like dual PTO, turning brakes, 3 pt hitch, 2 speed axle, shuttle transmission... the list goes on.

George that tractor looks awesome who made it? Amigo i never heard of that one. The amigo is listed in the http://www.tractordata.com under the garden tractors. I couldn't find th economy listed anywhere there.

We spent the whole day cleaning i up the montgomery wards hydrostatic 16 off and trying to get it to turn over. I cleaned the starter/generator inside and out and got it working. Since it was sitting outside for so long the wire connections all have to be cleaned. The engine has great compression and should run but i'd like to hear how it sounds before we take it all apart. I'd like to test the hydro tranny too then were good to go.

I have all the attachments now they got delivered today. The rear tiller is a heavy duty one too. It came with a long PTO shaft that drives it from the front of the tractor. The attachments don't look like the garden tractor stuff they look much heavier more like tractor stuff.

Me and my son are spending some quality time together too. He is learing on this one...

I need my new shop built soon but i'm thinking a two story one now with garden tractors upstairs and larger tractors down stairs. I need a tractor shed too. I got the tractor itch really bad now...
