Originating from Canada, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is the smallest of the Retriever family and perhaps the rarest.
It is a medium-sized dog (males 48-51cm for a proportionate weight of 20-23kg; females 45-48cm for a proportionate weight of 17-20kg); this does not mean that the Toller is the ideal Retriever for those with little space. A powerful, compact, balanced, well-muscled dog; medium to heavy in bone, with a high degree of agility, alertness and determination. The Toller is highly intelligent, easy to train and has great endurance. It needs space but is a loyal family dog with the Retriever temperament.
The Toller has a long water-repellent coat in various shades of fox-red to orange with at least one of the following white markings: blaze, chest, feet or tip of tail. For most the pigmentation of the nose, lips and eye rims is flesh-coloured, blending with the coat, or black. A strong and able swimmer the Toller has webbed feet.
The unique feature of the Toller is its high-pitched cry or screams.
