Tunis police try to silence the CGTT

Our comrade Habib GUIZA, Liaison Committee Coordinator for the Tunisian General Confederation of Workers (Confédération Générale Tunisienne du Travail – CGTT), was summoned yesterday, Tuesday, 13th of May 2008 to the central police headquarters in Tunis at 10 o’clock.

He was submitted to a two hour interrogatory by two police inspectors concerning the legal situation of the CGTT, in particular the decision of its unions in the mine fields of Gafsa to organize a protest meeting for their legal recognition by the company and the start of serious negotiations in order to find solutions to problems arising the company’s employee’s working conditions.

It was requested of Habib GUIZA to commit himself to ceasing all trade-union activity in the name of the CGTT under the pretext that it is illegal.

Habib GUIZA refused any engagement on this subject making the point that the trade unions of the CGTT were constituted in accordance with Tunisian legislation and the international conventions of the International Labour Organization.

We ask all trade unionists and democrats to support free trade unions in Tunisia and their right to represent workers and engage in collective bargaining and in particular to support the recognition of the CGTT and its unions.
