Connecting your iPhone to your Laptop using a wireless ad hoc network [iPhone]

with 239 comments

imageWhen I first got the iPhone, they used to tell me that the only means to get an internet connection to the iPhone is either the 3G or through a Wi-Fi access-point. I used to connect my older iMate to the internet over its USB connection to the laptop, that’s not possible anymore with the iPhone.

To keep it short, here’s what you need to do …

First, we need to create an ad hoc network. The iPhone needs to connect to a Wi-Fi access-point. It’s not possible to connect it directly to your laptop. So, we’ll create an ad hoc wireless network on the laptop, were other laptops and devices can connect to just as connecting to an access-point.
(The next steps are performed on Windows Vista. For Windows XP, do this and jump to step X.)

  1. Make sure your wireless adapter is enabled.
  2. Open the Networks and Sharing Center. Under Tasks (left), choose Manage Wireless Networks.
    image
  3. In the Manage Wireless Networks window, click Add.
    image
  4. Choose “Create an ad hoc network”. Press Next on the next page.
    image
  5. On the next page, enter a Network Name of your choice (as “iPhoneNetwork”). This is the network you’ll connect to from your iPhone. Choose WEP for Security Type (you can also choose “No Authentication (Open)”, but this way anyone in your ad hoc wireless network range can connect to your laptop.) Enter a Security Key as instructed, check “Save this network” and click Next.
    image
  6. You should get the “Your iPhoneNetwork is ready to use”. Before pressing Close, click on “Turn on Internet Connection sharing”.
    image
  7. Select your Local Area Network internet connection you usually use to connect to the internet and press Next. The next page should say “Internet connection sharing is enabled.” Press Close.

Now, your ad hoc network is ready.

The second step is connecting your iPhone to the “iPhoneNetwork” ad hoc wireless network.

  1. From your iPhone, open Settings. Choose Wi-Fi.
    imageimage
  2. Click on “iPhoneNetwork” and enter the password you defined earlier (Security Key), then press Join. It take you back to the previous screen but with the “iPhoneNetwork” checked.
  3. On your laptop, you should see the “Set Network Location” screen. Choose Home or Work, no big deal.
    image

You should open Safari browser and connect directly to the internet. Connect to Google or something to make sure that everything’s fine. And, yes, it’s a little buggy – you’ll sometimes have to do it over and over again!

Now you can access iTunes store or even download/update your iPhone applications directly without needing to do that on iTunes. Enjoy 🙂

  3. I have to admit it’s not always as smooth as shown above. I sometimes have to repeat it again for a couple of times before it acts “stable”.

Michelle: Yep, you sometimes have to do it manually .. !

  26. Folks, those who don’t have this thing working, you gotta mess around with the Wireless Adapter Settings. Go to your Wireless Network Connection Status, Sharing tab, and there’s Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). It isn’t always stably working on Vista – honestly, I don’t know why! Sorry!

  34. OMG, I finally made it!
My laptop was connected to the internet using the ethernet card. In the ethernet card’s IPv4 properties there were specific DNS settings for the router I was connected to…
Then I connected the iphone to the wireless adhoc of my laptop, I had ICS enabled, and on the iPhone I put the same DNS settings that I had on the IPv4 Properties of the ethernet card in my pc and it worked, internet on the iphone!!! 😀

  47. Ive been trying to connect my ipod touch this way for a while now. and every time i get to step 6, the option for turning on internet connection sharing is missing. everything from “recommended options:” down is all missing. i HAVE connected before. only once. it worked perfect. and looked exactly like youve posted. i can still set up the connection, and when i access it through my ipod, it connects. but when i go to the itunes store, it says “cannot connect to itunes store invalid argument.”
ive tried updated a bunch of stuff. i recently updated to windows 7, and it still isnt working.

does anyone have any idea why its not asking me to turn on internet connection?

after creating the adhoc wireless connection, there’s no “Turn on Internet Connection Sharing” button like on your 6th step. so, after pairing my itouch w/ my laptop, still, itouch cant browse the internet. i deduced that the problem is no “Turn on Internet Connection Sharing” button so the internet connection cant be shared.

im unfamilliar with those manual setting to connect my itouch to my laptop. could someone help me out??

  56. Hi guys! I’m not really good in computer but im willing to learn! ^^.

I have an HSDPA stick modem and i use it on my notebook running in xp sp3. and i’d have to create an ad hoc connection for me to be able to share the internet connection to my iphone via wifi from my notebook? is that right? If so, can i use the same process to make an ad hoc connection?

  58. For those who are using Windows 7 and atleast able to join the adhoc network through iPhone but not able to share the internet connection from PC/Laptop to iPhone, here is one way to do it:

    1. Create adhoc network in Win7 (PC/Laptop),
(try with “no encryption” or security key first and then try with the other ones). ignore the step where it says “turn on internet sharing”

    2. In “Change Adapter Settings” link, select both LAN network adapter and Wireless network adapter and right click on anyone and select “Bridge Connection”.

    3. Turn on iPhone wifi and join above wireless connection. You may have to sign on with your service providers credentials (user/pwd) after connection.

Hope this works as well with all of you as it worked for me.

  61. Hi I have been having the same issue as alot of you guys: sharing internet from my laptop with my ipod touch. At first I could for several days. Then every time I tried to establish a new connection the option for share this network was gone. You have to go under the internet settings and turn OFF the ICS then try a new wireless ad hoc. Hope this helps!!

  65. The solution to the internet connection problem is the Network Bridge.
I it found on this Microsoft website:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawford_02april22.mspx

You have to force your wireless network adapter into compatibility mode, because it doesn’t allow promiscuous mode. I guess that the newer WiFi adapters (cards) would allow this mode and that older ones don’t. And if they don’t, you have to force them!

  72. I did this on windows 7, it worked for my ipod touch but for some reason it won’t work with my iphone 3gs (upgraded with the latest updates)
I connect to the wireless network, it shows its connected (with the wifi symbol at the top in the iphone’s status bar) but as soon as i try using the internet via safari or any other app, it reverts back to using 3g or edge networks. I’ve checked and after reverting it still shows wifi is connected but the wifi symbol is no longer in the status bar and judging by the speed of the connection it really isn’t connected to wifi.
Any ideas why this is happening?

  90. I tried everything and finally got my iPhone to browse the internet. I use Windows Vista on my Dell laptop.

    1.Create Ad Hoc network first.
*Make sure your LAN and Wireless adapters are both ENABLED*
-Control Panel- Network and Sharing Center- Set up a connection or network- Set up a wireless ad hoc
-Give it a name, use WEP security, and type a simple password. Click Save network at the bottom. Viola
    2. Go back to Network and Sharing Center, click Manage network connections.
    3. Now left click on the LAN connection, hold the shift button and left click on the wireless connection. Now right click either connection and select Bridge Connections.
3b. Wait until the connections are bridged, may take several seconds.
    4. Grab your iphone, go to general settings, wifi, then select the ad hoc network you created. Viola.

  95. I finally got it working too, with an ipod touch and an iphone 3GS.

Follow the process as directed for setting up the network on the laptop. I set the IP address manually, to 192.168.3.1.

I then went start/run and typed ipconfig/all which gives all the details of your connections. Mine looked like this:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet C
    ontroller
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-26-18-FB-70-3D
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.47
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Monday, 25 October 2010 4:56:36 AM

    Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adap
    ter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-25-D3-5A-2C-1B
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.3.1
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

The ipod/iphone found the network, then set the settings manually to:

IP address 192.168.3.2 (one more than the laptop or other devices connected)
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.3.1 (IP of the wireless router of the laptop)
DNS: 192.168.1.1 (DNS setting for the Local Area Connection)

If you use the equivalent addresses from your ipconfig report, I suppose it will work.

    Good luck!

  101. Check out http://www.connectify.me
Connectify utilizes your computers’ built in Wi-Fi card to wirelessly share any available Internet connection: a cable modem, a cellular card, or even another Wi-Fi network.

iphone works well with windows 7 and it is free
other phones should work as well

Beware of a minor problem, if you switch off the wireless button on your laptop after disconnecting, remember to switch it back on again when you want to recconect your Iphone, or you will not see your original ad hoc wireless network to join!!!

if ur intention s to tak net thru adhoc,,just enable ICS..int the SHARING tab of the lan connection,,,select the local network as WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION,,now click OK..now connect adhoc,,,change the ASK TO JOIN CONNECTION in iphone settings…i think this would work…i m connecting like this…

  107. This is how you do this with Windows 7: once you get to step 6 stop. You don’t want to turn on Internet sharing for your wireless dongle, you want to turn it on for the connection to the Internet. So go into Network and Sharing Center, right click on whichever connection has “access type: internet” and click on “local area connection”. In there, go to properties, sharing, then turn on Internet Sharing. Then you must, must go to ‘advanced’ and then turn on everything except desktop control. You can now use internet on your iphone.

  121. Hello gang,
Very helpful and easy to follow site. Unfortunately for me, I am one of those plagued by the mysterious “loss of wifi after jailbreak” and upgrade to 4.2.1

I thought this might resurrect my wifi on my iPhone 3G (BB 6.15.00) but alas, no good. Wifi is actively, and continuously searching for a network but never finds one. Manual entry results in a “cannot find” response.

My son in the Navy purchased this phone (and a white 3G for my wife) as gifts. We’re on Tmobile; love the phone but wish I could hop on wifi since Tmobile’s 3G network is incompatible with iPhone.

I have tried almost every conceivable fix, I’ve poured over blogs, and YouTube vids, and short of the insane “reflowing the motherboard via an oven or heatgun” I have given up on ever getting wifi again on this phone.

    No warranty.
    No hope.

It’s a dead duck on wifi.

Perhaps someone will solve this issue in the near future. Until then…I’ll have to pop in my simcard now and then to use EDGE…otherwise, I’m keeping my Blackberry 9700 with 3G.

    Sigh…

  123. I stumbled across this page after trying to connect my vintage iPhone to my laptops internet connection, I followed everything said and it worked a treat eventually..at first the iPhone connected to the newly made ad-hoc netwerk connection but STILL used Edge, removed the new connection and did it all over again, this time enabling IPv6 and twaeking the home group options and all works fantastic. Just make sure you are NOT setting up a connection where the PC tries to use the iPhone as a modem! For anyone reading, I am using Windows 7 Pro which follows the Vista set-up guide exactly.

  124. p.s. For folk experiencing problems with Windows XP. Remember that XP Pro has enhanced networking capabilities than the Home version. i.e. Automation of a lot of the things you dont have to mess about with manually!

If internet connection IS enabled on any windows machine, then the iPhone HAS to be able to connect as it uses common industry standard protocalls but it will take a bit more messing about with perhaps if the OS is a Home version?? Just something to note.

  127. I’ve had issues, but if you follow the instructions, then do what Alex said. Posted. “Alex October 23, 2010” Then mine has been working perfectly.

I’m accessing lan connection in hotels, then sharing the wifi to my iphone. I had tried all sorts and nil and some success. Bridging the connection worked once.

Alex suggestion has worked a treat!! So first follow steps outlined at the start, then force ip details into your wifi settings on the phone. ‘Static’ settings btw.

    Good Luck!

  146. I had the same problem getting my iphone to access internet.

At 1st i had difficulties with sharing. I had many connections. Like Local area 1…local area 2 and then wireless 1 and 2 and 3…and if i wanted to share connection then i had to specify.. For example local area 1 with wireless 2. So i had to try several ways until i got it right. I shared through local area connection 1 (which is where my laptop connects to net) and from drop down i chose Wireless network connection which is where my iphone connects to wireless. The 1st time i did that everything worked and i was able to access internet using my iphone.

I went out used the laptop to access the wireless of my friend after changing the wireless settings to “obtain IP automatically” so i went back tried to use iphone again but this time it didnt work. There is connection but no internet so i thought it must be because i changed the wireless settings and i should obtain IP manually and i didnt know what IP it is.

So now it works again using the following IP 192.168.2.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 maybe it will work if you use the same numbers.

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::201a:69ed:29df:a007%23
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

on my iphone i see 192.168.2.1 as router and dns ip.

I dont know if my post can be helpful. Maybe it can enlighten you a bit. I myself dont understand those things much

  161. TY! Got my old original iphone to connect to the net through my laptop!

Only took about 30 min of trial and error, but it does work.

Check the wireless card settings in Device Manager (for enabling).
Enable ICS on the Internet connected network.
    Make the new Wireless network.
Connect the iphone to Wireless network.

Go back and make sure ICS is on at the Internet connected network.

You can now websurf, use itunes, the app store, etc.

    thanx OP 😀

Now, with it being ad hoc, I guess I will have to reconnect each time I get near my wireless network?

  168. I can’t believe this actually worked on my Dell Vostro 1520 laptop running Vista Home and my iPhone. I had to uncheck share internet connection and then bridge the connections by right clicking, then check share internet connection. I also had to fiddle with it a bit, checking and unchecking and bridging the connections but it finally worked when i did it in the order described. Also, only No security or WEP security works, not WPA security (this may only be a problem with Vista, not Windows 8). Also, the iPhone automatically inserted the proper DNS settings, etc. and I didn’t have to type anything in.

Works like a charm up to about 40-50ft away from the laptop and my 10 mbit internet connection gives me about 4.5 mbit on the iPhone. Amazing that my laptop is now a wireless router! The place I am renting on vacation only has a wired internet connection and I have some programs that I can only run on the iPhone and now I can do it. Thanks so much for all the info above!

  170. These instructions did not work for me in Vista 64 as stated. Here is what I did that worked for me. Some of it may be overkill but I had so much failure that I followed these procedures just to be sure.

    1) Turn on wireless. Ensure it is NOT associated with any networks. Set TCP/IP to auto. Disable ICS for the interface.

    2) Plug in wired LAN. Set TCP/IP to auto. Disable ICS for the interface.

    3) Go to “Manage wireless networks” and delete any failed attempts to this point. Make your iPhone “forget” any failed network connections to this point.

    4) Reboot.

    5) “Manage network connections.” Select the wireless interface and the wired interface. Right click & “Bridge”.

    6) Wait. It took a while (at least a minute or two) for the two networks to complete their briding procedures, pull addresses, etc and finally settle down. In my case I knew it was done when the wireless interface status matched showed connecting to the same name domain network as the LAN and it settled on “Enabled, Bridged”.

    7) Go through the steps outlined in this article to create the ad hoc network. Use a different name than any of your previous failed attempts.

    8) Go to “Connect to a network.” and ensure that the ad hoc network you just created says something about waiting for connections. If it does not connect to it so that it does change to this status.

    9) Connect your iPhone to the ad hoc network as normal. Give it at least a minute to negotiate the connection before you try to use any network resources.

    Should be good now.

  171. BTW, that should have been

    Eight)

    instead of

    8)

and I too was unable to connect to the ad hoc network with my iPhone 4 on iOS4 if it was set up using WPA2…only WEP worked.

  178. Seriously guys, for those of you having trouble connecting to internet from your iphones via the adhoc connection you made, try bridging the connections. Just disable the internet connection sharing on your working LAN connection, and (i am assuming you only have a local connection on your adhoc wireless connection), select the two connections together and right click, then select ‘bridge connections’. It’ll take few seconds to do its thing…and it works.!!! Tried and tested. I spent all night reading these comments and the only way it worked for me on my vista was this.

  191. I was unable to connect to the internet on my iPhone and iPad using internet connection sharing having successfully created an ad hoc wireless hub. It was driving me crazy until I decided to check my firewall settings in McAfee. Under Ports and System settings, I noticed a number of services which can be accessed by other PC’s on my network were not checked. I selected most of them and now I’m able to connect to the internet. Perhaps this is the same problem others are experiencing and this solves the problem.

  202. Here is one simple step … follow the same what Alaashaker asked to do… just before naming your network select the Security Type to WEP. Meaning before naming your network to “whatever”, select the security type to WEP and then name the network and then set the security key! .. this worked for me.
Actually if you dont set the Security Type before setting the name and the key, the system takes the security type as Open or WAP2 which prevents your iPhone to connect to internet!
