What Types Of Rain Forest Animals Are Endangered?

What are the types of edangered rainforest animals? That’s a question that All About Wildlife.com readers frequently ask—and it’s a great question, because unfortunately, the world’s rain forests are home not just to individual animals that are in danger of going extinct, but entire groups, categories, families or types of endangered rainforest animals.

The lemurs of Madagascar, a large island off the east coast of Africa, are a good example of one of these types of endangered rainforest animals. There are around 100 different species of these prosimian primates, including the ringtailed lemur in the photo to the left—and nearly every one of those lemur species is listed by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) as either Critically Endangered, Endangered, Threatened, Near-Threatened or Vulnerable.

The great apes—gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans—are another one of these types of endangered rainforest animals.

Other types of endangered rainforest animals include two species of rainforest rhinoceros (the Sumatran and Javan rhinos of Indonesia and Southeast Asia), Asian elephants, and many, many species of monkeys, birds and frogs. To name just a few examples, nine species of South American spider monkey alone are listed as either Endangered or Threatened, while the world’s largest parrot, the hyacinth macaw, which lives in the Amazon, is only one of a number of endangered parrots. Two monkey-eating rainforest eagles, the Philippine eagle and South America’s harpy eagle, both have places in the IUCN’s Red List.

One of the types of endangered rainforest animals that we’ll miss the most when it’s gone is the tiger. The six tiger species that remain on earth all are disappearing quickly due to illegal hunting by humans.
