ABE Research Group – “This group strives to bring a practical, application oriented approach to agent technology, in addition to making theoretical in-roads into this field. The majority of our current work is focussed on applying agent-based technology to the engineering design process — design decision support, concurrent engineering and collaborative design.”


ABM research at CSIRO – “The CSIRO agent-based modelling working group (CABM) is part of the CSIRO Centre for Complex Systems Science and brings together scientists across CSIRO who are interested in agent-based modelling techniques”

ARC Centre for Complex Systems – “The ACCS was established in 2004 as part of the the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence program. It was funded until mid-2009. The results achieved by the Centre over the five years of its existence, including theory, methods and tools, have laid the foundations for significant follow-on applied research projects in collaboration with industry (details of these projects are in the 2008 Annual Report, linked to below).  In particular, the Centre’s three core research programs in 2008 – air traffic managment, electricity networks and energy markets, and dependable computer-based systems – have all secured follow-on funding to apply their research outcomes in industry collaborations.”


AgE – Agent-Based Evolution project is dedicated to theoretical developed and applications of evolutionary algorithms to multi-agent systems.


AI-ECON – Artificial Intelligence Economic Research Center – “AI-ECON Research Center, formerly the AI-ECON Research Group, was established in 1995 at the College of Social Sciences, National Chengchi University. While interdisciplinary innovation may have triggered the idea of its establishment, it is the growth of computer power that has given momentum to such efforts. Our goal of the center is to fully harness the computer power to facilitate the integration of economics into the multidisciplinary research stream and to benefit economists from the cross-fertilization of ideas with different disciplinary backgrounds.”


CASA – The Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis is a (CASA) is an initiative within University College London to develop emerging computer technologies in several disciplines which deal with geography, space, location, and the built environment. As an interdisciplinary research centre expertise is drawn from archaeology, architecture, cartography, computer science, environmental science, geography, planning, remote sensing, geomatic engineering, and transport studies. This generates a unique blend of personnel who operate from CASA and associated departments within UCL. We recently moved from the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences into the Faculty of the Built Environment.”


CABSS Center for Agent-Based Social Systems Science was established as a center under the support of the university in April, 2005 to develop the mission of the 21st century COE program Creation of Agent-Based Social Systems Sciences.


Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research (CNetS) – “The Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research (CNetS) is part of the Pervasive Technology Institute of Indiana University and the School of Informatics and Computing. The center was established in 2009 to consolidate and enhance the research efforts of the complex systems group, which has been active within the School since 2004. CNetS is meant to foster interdisciplinary research in all areas related to complex systems. It is currently under the direction of Alessandro Vespignani, Rudy Professor of Informatics, Physics, and Statistics.”


Center for Complexity in Business – “We believe that we are at an inflexion point where complexity methods are going to enter the mainstream of management research. We, therefore, believe that the establishment of a Research Center (the first one of its kind) focused on the application of complex systems research to business problems at the Smith School of Business is extremely timely.”


Center for Complexity in Business – “The study of Complex Systems is the interdisciplinary study of large groups of interacting, heterogeneous, autonomous entities operating in dynamic, rich, and temporal environments. Complex Systems Science is not defined by a particular group of phenomena, but rather a way of viewing phenomena. Complex systems arise in a number of varied domains from economics to ecology to social science. In each of these domains there are problems that are defined by a large number of individuals that give rise to an emergent pattern, while at the same time that emergent pattern constrains the decisions of the individuals. For instance, in economics, the rise and fall of stock prices is defined by the aggregate patterns of stock purchases, but the ability for traders to buy and sell stocks is dependent on the historical price of those very same stocks.”


The Center for Connected Learning (CCL) and Computer-Based Modeling – Northwestern’s Center for Connected Learning and Computer-Based Modeling (CCL) is dedicated to the creative use of technology to deepen learning.


Center for Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems – “CASOS brings together computer science, dynamic network analysis and the empirical study of complex socio-technical systems. Computational and social network techniques are combined to develop a better understanding of the fundamental principles of organizing, coordinating, managing and destabilizing systems of intelligent adaptive agents (human and artificial) engaged in real tasks at the team, organizational or social level. Whether the research involves the development of metrics, theories, computer simulations, toolkits, or new data analysis techniques advances in computer science are combined with a deep understanding of the underlying cognitive, social, political, business and policy issues.”


Center for Policy Modelling – CPM research includes: the social aspects of informal value exchange; simulating the social processes of science; bridging the qualitative-quantitative worlds; the social complexity of immigration and diversity; social and socially-situated intelligence; evolutionary processes; social simulation; and the application of social processes/structures to computational systems.


Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research – “is part of the School of Informatics and Computing and the Pervasive Technology Institute of Indiana University. Complex Systems Institute – The CSI is a multi-disciplinary, University-wide research center located at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The CSI provides a home for researchers who cross disciplinary boundaries in search of holistic answers. The current faculty come from areas as diverse as: Computing, Political Science, Sociology, Business, Biology, Communications, Philosophy, Theatre, Language, and Health and Human Services.


Center for Complex Systems Research – studies systems that display adaptive, self-organizing behavior and systems that are usually characterized by a large throughput, such as turbulent flow, lightning, and the flow of information through the internet.


Center for the Study of Complex Systems –  is a multi- and interdisciplinary program at the University of Michigan designed to encourage and facilitate research and education in the general area of nonlinear, dynamical and adaptive systems. CSCS supports a diverse body of research, training and educational initiatives in order to advance the science of complex systems, including a weekly seminar series, a number of special seminars and workshops, and a Graduate Certificate  and an undergraduate minor in Complex Systems.


Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Finance – “The Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Finance (CeNDEF) is a multi-disciplinary research group, started in October 1998, by a Pionier-grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). CeNDEF is located at the Department of Quantitative Economics, of the Faculty of Economics and Econometrics of the University of Amsterdam.”


Central African Forest and Institutions – They are currently developing agent-based models of (1) road-building and biodiversity and (2) and an NGO-Government-Logger model.

CoCo – CoCo is an interdisciplinary research group at Binghamton University that studies the collective dynamics of various types of interacting agents as complex systems. The goals of CoCo are to: (1) advance our understanding about the collective dynamics of physical, biological, social, and engineered complex systems through scientific research; (2) Promote interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty and students in different schools and departments; and (3) translate the understanding to products and processes which will improve the well-being of people at regional, state, national and global scales.

Complex Adaptive Systems Group at ANL – The mission of the Complex Adaptive Systems Group (CAS Group) is to: (1) Perform research and develop complex adaptive systems that support synergistic social, economic, and ecological analyses; and (2) Apply CAS tools and techniques to problems at the local, national, and international levels.


Complex Adaptive Systems Group at Iowa State University – Many natural systems (e.g., brains, immune systems, ecologies, societies) and increasingly, many artificial systems (parallel and distributed computing systems, artificial intelligence systems, artificial neural networks, evolutionary programs) are characterized by apparently complex behaviors that emerge as a result of often nonlinear spatio-temporal interactions among a large number of component systems at different levels of organization. Consequently, researchers in a number of disparate areas including computer science, artificial intelligence, neural networks, cognitive science, computational economics, mathematics, optimization, complexity theory, control systems, biology, neuroscience, psychology, engineering, etc. have have begun to address, through a combination of basic as well as applied, theoretical as well as experimental research, analysis and synthesis of such systems.


Complex Markets – This center focuses on complex markets how their growth and evolution is driven by personal interactions among potential and current adopters. The personal interactions, typically word of mouth, imitation, and network effects, lie at the micro level of the system, while the aggregate results, typically adoption or sales, lie at the macro level. Agent based modeling including cellular automata and small-world are at the base of the micro-modeling.


Complex Systems at Ohio State – Complex systems are composed of multiple agents interacting over time. A complex system may be social, biological or consciously designed. Complex systems range from anthills to ecosystems, from individuals to small groups to cities and metropolitan regions, and from distributed robotics to air traffic control networks.


Complex Systems Center – “Our mission is to act as a hub and catalyst for interdisciplinary research, educational and technology-transfer activities in CEMS, UVM, and beyond, related to complex systems. In order to accomplish our mission, we will pursue a variety of strategic goals.”


Complex Adaptive Systems Laboratory – Complex adaptive systems (CAS) are all around us — in the natural world as well as in engineered environments. Examples include traffic and communication networks, human organizations, markets, economies, cities, insect colonies, ecosystems, the nervous and immune ystems, living organisms, and life itself. The research conducted in the Complex Adaptive Systems Lab has two purposes: (1) To elucidate, and possibly control, the functioning of real complex adaptive systems by building mathematical and computational models. (2)To use insights obtained from existing complex systems in designing better, smarter, more efficient engineered systems.


Computational Systems Biology Research Group, Tampere University of Technology – “In the Computational Systems Biology (CSB) research group, we develop and apply modeling and simulation tools for studying complex biological phenomena. The research team combines experts from different fields – cell and molecular biology, biotechnology, signal and image processing, statistics, mathematics, and computer science. The CSB research group is located at Tampere University of Technology, Department of Signal Processing and led by Professor Olli Yli-Harja.”


Cormas – “This site is devoted to the applied modelling of relationship between societies and their environment. This site is maintaine by the Green research unit from CIRAD. You will find here what we and our partners are doing with multi-agent systems about integrated natural resources management.

We are proposing a companion-modelling approach based on a computer tool, CORMAS, which is an agent-based simulation framework that can be downloaded free of charge. You will also be able to access application examples (with a models library) and publications. A description of the training courses that we are organizing is also given. The site aims to facilitate networking, with a forum for CORMAS users, a presentation of scientists involved and a collection of links related to agent-based simulation.


CoSMoS – This project aims to build capacity in generic modeling tools and simulation techniques for complex systems, to support the modeling, analysis and prediction of complex systems, and to help design and validate complex systems. CoSMoS researchers draw on state-of-the-art expertise in many aspects of computer systems engineering to develop modelling and simulation process and infrastructure specifically designed to allow complex systems to be explored, analysed, and designed within a uniform framework.


The CSIRO Centre for Complex Systems Science – “The CSIRO Centre for Complex Systems Science supports a network of scientists who research complex systems, by providing opportunities for collaboration, sharing of ideas and capacity building.”


Dynamics of Learning: Complexity Sciences Center. “The Dynamics of Learning project is a Computational Science and Engineering Center research initiative that seeks to understand the process of learning using techniques from statistical mechanics, dynamical systems, and computation theory.”


ESSA – “The European Social Simulation Association was formed in 2003 in order to promote the development of social simulation research, education and application in Europe. ESSA works closely with its American equivalent, NAACSOS and the Pacific Asian Association for Agent-based Approach in Economic & Social Complex Systems, PAAA.”


GRASIA – “The Grasia! research group of the Universidad Complutense Madrid (UCM) considers agent technology from a multi-disciplinary perspective, joining experts from the fields of Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Sociology. It promotes applied research by considering the agent paradigm as a key element for building distributed intelligent applications and for the analysis of complex systems.”


IAM – “IAM is a broad-based, multi- and inter- disciplinary group focusing on the design and application of computing systems for complex information and knowledge processing tasks. We seek to undertake world-class research in the theory, design, implementation and application of such systems and to provide leadership on their potential socio-economic impact. Our main focus is on the development of systems composed of multiple actors, some human some artificial agents, from different organisations that act based on the best available information and interact in flexible ways in order to achieve their individual and collective aims.”


ICURS – Institute for Canadian Urban Research Studies: “The Institute for Canadian Urban Research Studies (ICURS) is an inter-disciplinary research centre based at Simon Fraser University. The Institute has as its focus increasing knowledge and research studies and the development of new analysis tools for the study of crime in an urban environment. ICURS focuses on: crime reduction policy, crime analysis, and computational criminology.”


Intelligent Agent Laboratory – The Intelligent Agent Laboratory (Agentlab) is an active research group conducted jointly between the Melbourne School of Engineering (Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering) and the Faculty of Science (Department of Information Systems).


Krasnow Institute – “The Krasnow Institute seeks to expand understanding of mind, brain, and intelligence by conducting research at the intersection of the separate fields of cognitive psychology, neurobiology, and the computer-driven study of artificial intelligence and complex adaptive systems. These separate disciplines increasingly overlap and promise progressively deeper insight into human thought processes. The Institute also examines how new insights from cognitive science research can be applied for human benefit in the areas of mental health, neurological disease, education, and computer design.”


IFAAMAS – The International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (IFAAMAS) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote science and technology in the areas of artificial intelligence, autonomous agents and multiagent systems.


ICS – Modeling norms and networks: “The overarching focus of this research line is on modeling the interdependent dynamics of social norms and social networks. Substantively, we are interested in two main questions. First, how and under what conditions does social integration arise in groups that are socially or culturally diverse? Second, how and under what conditions do stable social norms arise in groups with divergent interests and preferences? Social networks play a key role both for social integration and for social norms.”


INICIO – Social Systems Engineering Centre. “Our interests are focused in the study of complex systems. We have applied different methods to characterize complexity in different research fields. The study of complex physical and social systems requires a multidisciplinary approach that integrates various inputs from economics, sociology, engineering, geography, etc. .. Moreover, the methodologies developed in recent years on artificial intelligence and within the field of systems thinking allows to construct models to help understand complex systems.”


LabMAg – The Laboratory of Agent Modelling is a research unit dedicated to computational models of agents, especially the role of physical, biophysical and social models of agents. Three main ideas are explored: these models (1) have computational power, (2) have structure/form that can be replicated by computation, and (3) may be used as metaphors in real problem solving.


MASS – “The MASS group specializes in Multi-Agent Systems, Cellular Automata and statistical simulations. Much of the work we do is social and/or ecological simulations aimed at discovering whether our understanding of these systems is accurate or prediction of how such systems may change.”


MCMSC – “The MCMSC is an ASU center that strives to create a dynamic community of quantitative scientists and mathematicians, driven to contribute to the solution of problems in the biological, environmental, and social sciences. Through flexible research and cross-disciplinary programs, the MCMSC will train a new generation of scientists whose research is driven by “solution” rather than “discipline.” Armed with this mindset, the MCMSC will promote, support and encourage teams and faculty that do not hold a reductionist view of the world.”


MoCSSy – “The MoCSSy program develops and applies innovative modelling to advance research in complex urban dynamics.”


MOFFITT Cancer Center: Integrated Mathematical Oncology – Among the approaches used is individual/agent-based modeling. By using a range of mathematical modeling approaches targeted at specific types of cancer we will aid in the development and testing of treatment strategies. This multi-model, multi-scale approach allows for a diverse and rich interdisciplinary environment that will create many novel approaches for the treatment and understanding cancer.


Multicellular system biology – focuses on the understanding of tissue formation on different time and length scales. It pursues projects on the development of models to permit realistic simulations of multicellular organization processes, and on the analysis of data that occur during this process.


New England Complex systems Institute – a non-profit research and education institute developing new scientific methods, and applying them to the challenges of society.


Open ABM – “Welcome to the updated OpenABM website. OpenABM is under active development to provide improved services and usability. Future improvements in development include a redesigned Model Archive, additional educational resources, and expanded community building features. ”


SCE – Society for Computational Economics: Computational economics explores the intersection of economics and computation. These areas include agent-based computational modeling, computational econometrics and statistics, computational finance, computational modeling of dynamic macroeconomic systems, computational tools for the design of automated Internet markets, programming tools specifically designed for computational economics, and pedagogical tools for the teaching of computational economics. Some of these areas are unique to computational economics, while others extend traditional areas of economics to new areas through computational techniques.


SEED Center for Data Farming – Mission: Advance the collaborative development and use of simulation experiments and efficient designs to provide decision makers with timely insights on complex systems and operations.


SIGABIS – “The Special Interest Group on Agent-Based Information Systems (SIGABIS) is advancing knowledge in the use of agent-based IS, which includes complex adaptive systems and simulation experiments, to improve organizational performance. SIGABIS promises to fill an existing gap in the field and, therefore, is more focused on the strategic and business issues with agent technology and less on the artifact itself, such as computational algorithms, which are well investigated by computer science related research groups.”


SimPark – is a French-Brazilian interdisciplinary research project with the objective of defining and evaluating computer supported companion methodology for participatory management of protected areas (for biodiversity protection and social inclusion). The methodology uses informatics: distributed role playing games, negotiation support, artificial agents, modeling and simulation of environmental resources.
