NATO PA Sci-Tech Committee adopts draft resolution on destroying bio-chemical warfare stockpiles
The Science and Technology Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly adopted on Sunday a draft resolution calling on the U.S., Russia and Iraq to completely destroy their declared chemical weapons stockpiles.
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly calls on the United States, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Iraq to duly and fully destroy their declared chemical weapons stockpiles in a responsible manner, the draft resolution reads.
The Committee rejected an amendment advanced by the Russian side, according to which the reference to the destruction 'in due time' of the stockpiles should be replaced with the word 'soon', given that - according to Russian MPs - both Russia and the U.S. said they cannot meet the schedule for the complete destruction of their stocks of chemical weapons by April 2012.
The amendment was rejected by the Committee on ground that the U.S. and Russia must set an example to other states and take the initiative of destroying their own stocks of chemical weapons.
We are running late and we need to give an example. We need to act seriously in this respect, U.S. Congressman David Scott, general rapporteur on the draft resolution told Agerpres .
The draft resolution also calls on all states that haven't declared their stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons to stop these programs and declare their entire warfare inventory.
The draft document also calls on all governments and parliaments of NATO member states to support efforts against the threat of biological and chemical weapons and take measures to counteract terrorist attacks, as well as and intentions and preparations for such attacks using chemical and biological weapons.
