Unsolicited Customer feedback:

"Drove the car today for the first time with the new brake material. What a difference! About twice the stopping power and twice the bite. No comparison to the previous material. Thanks for keeping this available".

*There are 2 designs of aluminium front brake shoes fitted to the Giulietta which can be identified by a number cast into the shoe. The pattern of drilled holes is different on each type of shoe so the the brake linings cannot be interchanged or intermixed from one type of shoe to another.

* Most Normale type cars have shoes identified by a casting # 1365.53.043. These have been called narrow or shallow shoes. However early cars may be found with shoes identified by a casting # 1365.53.026.

* Veloce type shoes are identified by a casting # 1365.53.026. These have been called wide, thick or deep shoes.

Of course since the two shoe types are interchangeable, who knows what has been done on a car in the past 60 plus years??

Please see the photo for item 1BRF115 to assist the correct identification of the brake shoe type. The return and replacement of an incorrectly ordered lining type is an expensive task so it it best to get it right first time!

Information

Ferodo MZ Brake Lining Material

I believe that FERODO MZ41 was the finest lining material for classic Alfa Romeos. It was specified by Alfa Romeo for original fitment to all production models from the 1900 Berlina of 1950 through the Giulietta, 2000, 2600, to the first Giulia 105 series TI models which were fitted with triple shoe front brakes.

Ferodo MZ41 was replaced by the new asbestos-free MZ equivalent which itself is now obsolete following the closure of the factory. I now have another woven material based on Ferodo & Raybestos formulations which has very similar characteristics and has been consistently well received by AlfaStop Customers.

I offer lining sets containing pre-drilled linings & rivets for fitting by our Customers. I also offer a relining service of Customer's own brake shoes for customer within the E.U..

NOTE: Care should be taken not to breathe in asbestos dust. Brake dust should be treated with a proprietary brake cleaner fluid and should not be removed by brush or compressed air.

* Most Giulietta Normale type cars have front brake shoes identified by 1365.53.043.
* Giulietta Veloce type front brake shoes are identified by 1365.53.026.

BEWARE OF HAVING YOUR BRAKE SHOES RELINED WITH A BONDED-ON MOULDED (NON WOVEN) LINING! THESE MATERIALS ARE FREQUENTLY SPECIFIED FOR A VAN OR LIGHT TRUCK, POSSIBLY WITH A WEIGHT OF 2 TO 3 TONS AND MOST LIKELY FITTED WITH A SERVO. YOUR CAR WEIGHS UNDER 1 TON AND MOST PROBABLY DOES NOT HAVE A SERVO, SO THE VAN OR TRUCK BRAKE LINING MATERIAL WILL NEVER REACH THE OPTIMUM WORKING TEMPERATURE, RESULTING IN A VERY POOR BRAKING PERFORMANCE.

Update January 2019 - Having heard that the material in the thickness suitable for our cars was due to be discontinued, AlfaStop has purchased the entire stock of the distributor of this material.

Technical Tip

Relining Brake Shoes

Brake linings should never be bonded to aluminium brake shoes.

There is a possibility of the aluminium corroding at the point where the lining is bonded, with the result that the lining may separate from the brake shoe. This separation is particularly prone to occur in a damp atmosphere and when the bonding is two or three years old.

Bonding may appear to be a quick & easy method, but is no substitute for not having the correct tools to apply drilled linings with the rivets. The subsequent removal of bonded linings from aluminium shoes is a very time consuming and costly process.

Linings can, however, be bonded to steel shoes such as Giulietta rears, although all AlfaStop lining sets are supplied drilled, with the correct rivets.

Finally, always replace all the linings on an axle: do not be tempted to reline just one shoe or one side.
